Celtics took shots on Larry Bird, Danny Ainge

The subject was the number of picks the Celtics have in tomorrow’s draft and whether that gives them more of an opportunity to take a chance on a player with injury issues or an overseas commitment.

The C’s could well make a trade that alters all this, but as it stands now, they have the 16th, 28th, 33rd and 45th overall picks, two in each round, and it would seem they are well-poised to take a risk or two.

Danny Ainge doesn’t necessarily see it that way, which, as we’ll soon explain, is more than a little odd.

Celtics expect a busy NBA Draft night
Danny Ainge has plenty to deal

Danny Ainge trotted out his usual list of pre-draft policies yesterday.

All members of the current roster are available for a draft-night trade. Expect something upwardly mobile to happen tomorrow night, since Ainge doesn’t want to actually have to draft four rookies. The Celtics don’t draft according to need. They take the best player available, even if he’s another point guard.

The Celtics president of basketball operations, though, admittedly is more active than usual, thanks to the fact he has more picks available for trade during the next four years than any other team. Those future first-rounders from Brooklyn might be his most valuable assets of all, now that the Celtics’ own picks have dipped to the middle of the pack.

2015 NBA Draft big board: Ranking prospects from 1-60

The hype for the 2015 NBA Draft has reached its boiling point, but much of the hysteria is warranted. This year's draft class is loaded with All-Star talent in the lottery and potential steals in the 20-40 range. Lottery picks like Karl-Anthony Towns and Mario Hezonja could blossom into stars, while mid-draft picks like Anthony Brown and Michael Frazier have the tools to surpass all expectations.

In many ways, this class resembles the 2012 draft, which featured stars like Anthony Davis and Damian Lillard as well as steals like Draymond Green and Khris Middleton.

Below is a list of my top-60 prospects. This is a general draft board; team-specific ones will differ. The players in each tier are interchangeable depending on individual team needs.

NBA draft SWAGs for the Boston Celtics

I'm convinced that something is going to happen on draft night. Ok, technically something has to happen, they at least have to pick players. I'm talking about trades. As in multiple. They may be big (DeMarcus Cousins?) or they may be small, but after watching the video of Danny Ainge's press scrum from this morning, I refuse to believe that Thursday night will be boring.

I have no (credible) sources and no additional information to share other than what I've already passed along, but I do have a blog to fill and some free time, so I figured it was as good a time as any for some creative writing. So here goes.

5 Predictions for Draft Night

1. Marcus Smart gets traded. Wait, what? He's like the closest thing we have to untouchable, right? Well, yes and no. He's a very good prospect and...

Rumor: Celtics offered Marcus Smart to the 76ers

With the NBA Draft rapidly approaching we are bound to be struck by a flurry of trade rumors over the next couple of days. Most of these rumors will never come to fruition, but many of them come with at least a grain of truth that the offer has been at least discussed. Even if it doesn't happen, it still provides us with some insight into what teams are thinking.

The latest rumor says a lot about what the Boston Celtics are willing to do.

According to the L.A. Times' Broderick Turner, league executives have reveled that the Celtics offered point guard Marcus Smart, along with the No. 16 and No. 28 first-round picks in this year's draft, to the Philadelphia 76ers for Nerlens Noel and the No. 3 pick in the draft.
