Marcus Smart finishes fifth in Rookie of the Year voting

Boston Celtics point guard Marcus Smart finished fifth in the league's Rookie of the Year voting.

Smart received one second-place vote and three third-place votes for six total points among the 130 ballots cast by sports writers and broadcasters. Minnesota's Andrew Wiggins won the award with 604 total points. Chicago's Nikola Mirotic (335 points), Philadelphia's Nerlens Noel (141) and Orlando's Elfrid Payton (79) also finished ahead of Smart.

Two of Smart's four total votes came from local broadcasters (Celtics radio voice Cedric Maxwell had Smart second to Mirotic, while TV play-by-play man Mike Gorman placed Smart third on his ballot behind Wiggins and Noel).

2015: Boston's cap space journey

WALTHAM, Mass. -- For more than a decade, Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has picked up his phone at the stroke of midnight on July 1 and started phoning prospective free-agent targets while knowing he has never had the necessary resources to snag a true top-tier talent.

That could change in eight weeks.

The Celtics have the potential to free the cap space necessary to offer a marquee free agent a maximum contract this summer. For the first time, Ainge can try to sell a player on why he should be the cornerstone of basketball's most decorated franchise, and he can do it without the constraints of the cap that have limited him to this point.

Inconvenient Truth: C's could use a vet like Pierce

It's too bad Paul Pierce is having so much fun down there in the nation's capital, because it's a lot of fun to daydream about what it'd be like to have Pierce back in green to finish out his career with the Boston Celtics.

The 37-year-old Pierce, fresh off a customs-hating, Drake-ribbing first-round sweep of the Toronto Raptors, scored 19 points to help the Washington Wizards defeat the Atlanta Hawks in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series on Sunday.

Report: Stevens starting to feel like a New Englander

Brad Stevens views the change as inevitable. His children, 9-year-old Brady and 5-year-old Kinsley, have started dropping their R’s.

"They’re already doing it a little bit. It’s all part of the experience, I guess," the Celtics coach said of how local culture has taken hold of his Indiana family. "My wife and I laugh about it, and then we realize we probably have an accent to people here. However you say water, we get the point."

Report: Larry Bird's short, eventful baseball caree

By Dana Hunsinger Benbow of The Indianapolis Star:

Larry Bird redeemed himself in his second at bat, drilling a single up the middle to drive in two runs.

"That gave us a 3-1 lead," Warn said. "Did he win that game for us? I wouldn't tell him that. But his runs proved to be the winning runs because they didn't score any more."

That day of baseball could have ended just like that. Bird 1-for-2 with two RBIs. ISU winning both games of the doubleheader. But it didn't.

Trill of it all: The cost of moving up in draft

The one name that Boston Celtics fans tend to salivate over more than any other when the 2015 NBA draft is referenced is Kentucky big man Willie Cauley-Stein.

The problem, of course, is that Cauley-Stein -- a 7-footer with freak athleticism -- is expected to be off the board by the time the Celtics utilize the first of their four picks in this year's draft at No. 16. And that invariably leads to hand-wringing over whether Boston's late-season playoff surge cost it a chance at the sort of impact rim protector the team so desperately covets.

In his "Grade A" mock draft, ESPN draft guru Chad Ford referenced this when he wrote, "Celtics fans are rightfully stoked that this year's squad made the playoffs. But it came at huge price.
