Maine Red Claws preview: Young, smart and hoping to win
The season opens Friday night at the Expo.
By Kevin Thomas

The whistle blew in practice and Coach Mike Taylor approached a couple of younger players for the Maine Red Claws. There’s a lot of youth on this team. Half of the Red Claws’ players are rookies, newbies getting their first taste of professional ball. So you expect mistakes. That’s why Taylor blew his whistle...

Red Claws start slowly, but the finish is fine
Chris Wright and Jermaine Taylor lead Maine in a convincing 108-95 win to open the season.
By Kevin Thomas

It was the first game in the Maine Red Claws’ fifth season, and it looked like a case of opening-night jitters. Missed shots, defensive lapses, and suddenly the Red Claws trailed 13-2 after five minutes in their game against the Springfield Armor Friday night. But it was only five minutes. The Red Claws regrouped and routed Springfield 108-95 before 2,647 at the Portland Expo...

Claws dump Erie, but may lose Jermaine Taylor
The veteran guard apparently injures his left leg.
By Kevin Thomas

The ease of victory and the joy of a 2-0 start to the season was tempered Sunday afternoon. Well before the Maine Red Claws were congratulating themselves after a 127-100 rout of the Erie BayHawks, they were gathered around teammate Jermaine Taylor. Taylor, the veteran guard with NBA experience, crashed to the floor while cutting...

Red Claws prevail on buzzer-beater
An inbounds alley-oop pass from Corey Allmond to Chris Wright gives Maine a 92-91 win.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Chris Wright slammed home the winning basket with a half-second left on the clock, giving the Maine Red Claws a 92-91 win over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in a D-League game Friday night at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

Wright came off a pick at the top of the key and dunked an alley-oop pass from Corey Allmond.

Gaddy points Red Claws to success
A rookie playmaker leads unbeaten Maine.
By Kevin Thomas

The undefeated Maine Red Claws, with their rookie-heavy lineup, return to the Portland Expo Saturday night at 7 to play the Idaho Stampede. Guiding the inexperienced Red Claws is the youngest of them all, 21-year-old point guard Abdul Gaddy...

Gaines proving his worth for Red Claws
Frank Gaines doesn’t start, but he’s second on the team in scoring.
By Kevin Thomas

Frank Gaines is like everyone else playing in the NBA D-League, trying to prove his worth on the court. For Gaines, it is nothing new. Out of high school, he was not recruited by Division I schools and only made it through connections. Out of college, Gaines got a workout with the Atlanta Hawks this past summer, but he was not drafted, nor invited to a preseason camp...

Skyforce may have Red Claws feeling heat
Miami’s D-League affiliate is tied for second in the Central Division.

The Maine Red Claws are off to a 5-2 record, but face some challenges Friday night when the team plays host to the Sioux Falls Skyforce at 7 p.m. at the Expo. The Skyforce are 6-2, tied for second place in the Central Division of the NBA D-League. In their seven previous games, the Red Claws have mostly feasted on teams...

D-League: Red Claws stumble against Armor
Maine is held to a season-low point total as Springfield wins for only the second time, 93-74.
By Fran Sypek

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Maine Red Claws have seen enough of the Springfield Armor lately to know their rivals were capable of having a breakout game. What the Red Claws did not know was they would be the ones to wake what could be a sleeping giant. Springfield dominated defensively and earned only its second victory this season, beating the Red Claws 93-74 Sunday before 1,304 at the MassMutual Center...

Red Claws lose a lead, then the game
Maine leads for much of the first three quarters before Iowa comes back, 110-107.
By Bill Kopatich

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Maine Red Claws allowed the Iowa Energy to stay close Friday night. Then they watched them win. After the Red Claws led for most of the first three quarters, Iowa rallied for a 110-107 victory at Wells Fargo Arena...

Babb at his best but Red Claws still lose
It’s a bittersweet homecoming for the former Iowa State standout.
By Bill Kopatich

DES MOINES, Iowa — It was a bittersweet homecoming for Maine Red Claws guard Chris Babb on Saturday. Babb led Maine with 21 points but the Red Claws still lost 101-94 to the Iowa Energy. Babb came into the game averaging 9.7 points, but had nearly doubled his season average in the first half with 16 points...
