NBA Draft rumors 2014: Marcus Smart thinks Boston Celtics really liked his workout and could pick him

While cautioning that the Celtics like a lot of players in this draft, they do like Smart. They came away from his first workout (he apparently visited again for a second) raving about his leadership.

“I thought he was good. I thought he was physical. I thought he was a leader,” head coach Brad Stevens said after the session two weeks ago. “I thought he shot the ball well in drills. I think that clearly, he’s got a way about him that people follow. He is a very tough guy and competed the whole time. My expectations for him were high from that regard, but he certainly met them.”

Top 3 Semi-Reasonable Celtics Scenarios of NBA Draft Week, in Order of Appeal
should probably have squeezed the words "within reason" into that headline, huh?

One of the chief appeals of the buildup to the NBA Draft is the idea that while everything may not be possible, it's at least easy to imagine it being possible, especially if you have a rudimentary clue with the trade machine. Could Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Love, and Rajon Rondo unite to form the Big Three, Volume Three? Sure! And here's the 17-step plan to how that might just work.

I love this stuff. I love the machinations and rumors and misdirection and posturing that accompanies ever...

Celtics take Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart with No. 6 pick
The 6-foot-3, 227-pound guard averaged 18 points as a sophomore last season. Also, Boston takes James Young of Kentucky with the 17th pick.

BY HOWARD ULMANAP..BOSTON — Soon after Wyc Grousbeck’s group bought the Boston Celtics, Red Auerbach gave him some advice. The team’s legendary president at the time “told me personally right when I came in, ‘you need instigators, not retaliators,’ ” Grousbeck said. Twelve years later, the rebuilding Celtics drafted what Grousbeck called an “instigator” when they took guard Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State with the sixth pick Thursday night...

First-round picks eager to help Celtics turn it around
The rookies are joining a team looking to recover from a 25-win season.

BY HOWARD ULMAN ..WALTHAM, Mass. — Marcus Smart wasn’t born when his half brother played in a Texas high school basketball game despite having cancer. Yet Todd Westbrook’s perseverance through his recurring bouts with the disease is an inspiration to the Boston Celtics’ new guard. Like the time Westbrook surprised his coach by leaving the hospital where he was being treated for a tumor behind his left eye...

By Chris Forsberg ..WALTHAM, Mass. -- Free agent point guard Avery Bradley has agreed to re-sign with the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, according to a league source. Rapid reaction: C's re-sign Avery Bradley
By Chris Forsberg
Some thoughts and analysis after Avery Bradley agreed to re-sign with the Boston Celtics for four years, $32 million:

• TOP PRIORITY SECURED: Without the necessary cap space to pursue big-name free agents, and likely needing other dominoes to fall before they can navigate the trade route, the Celtics moved quickly to lock up the one player they could spend to secure....

W2W4: Celtics at summer league
By Chris Forsberg

The Boston Celtics open their five-game summer league slate on Saturday afternoon in Orlando. Here are a handful of things to watch over the next week:

Smart's first NBA game experience. Within minutes of the Celtics' selecting Marcus Smart with the sixth overall pick in this past week's draft, some had packed the bags of Rajon Rondo and suggested the selection meant he was sure to be traded. Let's pump those brakes and at least see what the kid can do at summer league before we deem him ready to replace an All-Star point guard...
