Smart named to USA men's Select team
By Chris Forsberg
Boston Celtics rookie guard Marcus Smart was one of 13 players named to the 2014 USA Men's Select team for USA Basketball on Tuesday.
Members of the select team will train with the 2014 men's national team during its camp in Las Vegas from July 28-31 and the program is often a stepping stone for young players to join the national team in the future.

Smart is joined on the select team by Harrison Barnes (Golden State Warriors); Trey Burke (Utah Jazz); Jimmy Butler (Chicago Bulls); Draymond Green (Golden State Warriors), Tim Hardaway Jr. (New York Knicks); Tobias Harris (Orlando Magic); Doug McDermott (Chicago Bulls); Victor Oladipo (Orlando Magic); Mason Plumlee (Brooklyn Nets); Miles Plumlee (Phoenix Suns); Dion Waiters (Cleveland Cavaliers); and Cody Zeller (Charlotte Hornets).

Trim Time: How C's can pare down roster

The Boston Celtics currently have 18 players under contract for the 2014-15 season with a total salary commitment of more than $80 million. While we wait for the official numbers on Evan Turner's free-agent deal, Boston is expected to sit $3+ million over the luxury-tax line ($76.8 million) with a need to trim at least three bodies before the start of the regular season. If next season is heavy on development, the Celtics will have no desire to pax luxury tax, and avoiding the tax for a second straight season sets them up well to avoid stiff repeater penalties when they do launch back to contender status...

More summer hoops for Olynyk

Boston Celtics second-year forward Kelly Olynyk is expected to get additional offseason game reps as a member of Canada's senior men's basketball team.

Olynyk reported for camp earlier this week in Toronto before the team, which did not qualify for this year's World Cup in Spain, instead traveled to Slovenia to open an 11-game European exhibition schedule on Thursday. Olynyk, a Toronto native who grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia, did not play for the national team last summer while sidelined by a case of plantar fasciitis. He did attend camp with the national team and expressed a desire to compete for his county

Roundup: Fav's rehab; Olynyk leads Canada

A handful of Boston Celtics-related links while enduring the summer doldrums:

• El Rehab Indestructible: Second-year center Vitor Faverani has been offering glimpses into his rehab from knee surgery. In Spain and rehabbing with a trainer from his previous pro team in Valencia, Faverani told SuperDeporte that he hopes to be back at 90-percent health when he returns to Boston in early September. Referencing his meniscus tear, Faverani, in a translated version of the article, said: "I got injured because I trained there too [much] and, as I have no limits, I [got] hurt. [I] went a little silly, but it was my first year and I wanted to show a lot with my work."

USA Basketball still loves Smart

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart is one of only two rookies on USA Basketball's select team that opens a four-day training with the national team on Monday in Las Vegas. Smart has cemented his place in the USA Basketball pipeline in recent years, especially after helping the under-19 squad win gold at the World Championships in Prague last summer (where he averaged 9.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.2 assists in nine games). Smart also attended the national team's mini camp last July in Las Vegas...
