Notebook: Smart's defense stands out

By Brian Robb..ORLANDO -- The games won't start counting for real for another few months, but Marcus Smart already admitted to feeling a few butterflies as he made his professional debut for the Boston Celtics on Saturday afternoon during Orlando Summer League play. "First half, I'm not going to lie, I was nervous a little bit," Smart said following a scoreless first half that included an 0-for-4 shooting line and two missed free throws. "It was my first pro game with a new group of guys. It was a little nerve-wracking." ...

summer ball:
Notes: Young and the restless

By Chris Forsberg..ORLANDO, Fla. -- Boston Celtics assistant coach Jay Larranaga laughed before the question was finished. In charge of Boston's summer squad again this year, Larranaga has been deflecting questions on the health of rookie James Young all week, and Young was the focus of the very first query when Larranaga met with reporters before the team's offday session on Sunday at an area high school...

Mannix: C's inclined to wait to see if Rondo's value boosts
July 7, 2014, 7:30 am

Rajon Rondo was at the center of some trade talk over the past week. Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated joined Sports Sunday to discuss the future of the Celtics point guard. "There are a number of teams that are excited about potentially making an offer for Rajon Rondo," said Mannix. "No matter what Boston says, the likelihood of playing Marcus Smart and Rajon Rondo together just seems slim."

When could the Celtics decide to make a deal?

"I think the Celtics are inclined to wait until at least the season starts, mid-way point of the season, trade deadline to start seriously fielding offers," explained Mannix. "Because then Rondo's value will be at it's highest. If it does get back to

Doc Rivers a man of patience
Ex-Celtics coach: Worth the wait

ORLANDO, Fla. — Doc Rivers is miles away from his days as a Celtic, both literally and figuratively. The coach and, now, president of basketball operations of the Los Angeles Clippers has a different set of problems, but none of them involve heavy roster reconstruction. “We’re just like a lot of teams at this time of the year,” Rivers said with a laugh late yesterday afternoon. “We’re begging people to take our money.”...

C's trade exception set to expire; Stephenson an option?

ORLANDO, Fla. — One of the Boston Celtics' biggest assets this offseason was the $10.3 million trade exception they generated in dealing Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to Brooklyn last year. The exception will expire on Saturday and according to Danny Ainge, no deal is near completion. But a viable option for the Celtics in using the exception may be Indiana's Lance Stephenson. An unrestricted free agent, Stephenson has already turned down a five-year deal worth $44 million to return to the Pacers. He is apparently seeking a deal with a starting salary of at least $10 million...

Welsh: C's 'haven't given up hope' for Love

The Celtics have yet to make a big move, although their name has been brought up in numerous rumors.

Michael Felger believes Danny Ainge "still has something cooking." On Sports Tonight, Tim Welsh gave Felger a little hope, explaining that the Celtics aren't done pursuing Kevin Love. "His agents are telling him that the Celtics are really pushing both feet on the pedal," said Welsh. "Trying to get something, and do something creative, bringing more assets in and dealing them to Minnesota...

Rondo welcomes rookie guard Smart to Celtics
By The Sports Xchange

Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo notices the crowd forming behind him on the roster, but is not bothered by general manager Danny Ainge’s decision to draft a point guard sixth overall in the NBA draft last month. “I don’t think nothing of it,” Rondo said. He told the Boston Globe “I am who I am,” when asked for his reaction to the Celtics selection of Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart in the lottery. Smart dominated the ball at the college level, and is not considered a polished perimeter shooter who could transition to shooting guard...

Celtics reportedly part of a three-team trade
Media reports say Boston acquired guard Marcus Thornton, center Tyler Zeller and a future first-round selection.

CLEVELAND — The Boston Celtics reportedly are part of the plan for the Cleveland Cavaliers to clear a path for LeBron James’ return, and should get their own boost in the process. According to multiple media reports, Cleveland created salary-cap space with a three-way trade involving Boston and Brooklyn, ensuring it will have enough to offer James a maximum contract. In the deal, which has not been confirmed by the Celtics, Boston will receive guard Marcus Thornton from the Nets and center Tyler Zeller from Cleveland, as well as a future first-round draft pick from the Cavs...
