Boston Celtics hire Butler University coach Brad Stevens as head coach

BOSTON – In almost stealth-like secrecy, the Boston Celtics surprised not only the NBA and collegiate world but likely the entire sports world when they announced Wednesday that they have hired Butler University men’s basketball coach Brad Stevens as their new head coach. Ex-Butler C Andrew Smith explains Brad Stevens' talents as a coach

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Andrew Smith hails from the same town as Brad Stevens: Zionsville, Indiana. Smith pursued Butler before they were interested in him, and the selling point, the center said, was their coach, Stevens, who is now the head coach of the Boston Celtics.

It's a whole different level of basketball, but Smith, who is a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder's summer league team here, is confident that Stevens will do just fine.

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The plan was to sneak home for some family time. After a whirlwind first week as head coach of the Boston Celtics, Brad Stevens flew from Orlando to Indianapolis last Thursday with hopes of a few quiet moments with his wife and two young children. Maybe even a little shut-eye.

It didn't happen, of course. His first day back home saw him trek two hours south to Louisville for a 75-minute confab with point guard Rajon Rondo, one of the pressing items on his lengthy new-job to-do list. Even when he returned to Indianapolis, Stevens' phone never quite stopped buzzing.
