NBA PLAYOFFS: Celtics take on Knicks with heavy hearts

BY BRIAN MAHONEY

NEW YORK -- Doc Rivers' phone rang sometime around 6 a.m. Friday, a concerned Boston Celtics owner calling to check on his coach and team.

The Celtics were already safely in New York, but forgive Steve Pagliuca for forgetting. This is a sad, confusing and chaotic time in Boston, and nobody is thinking about basketball first.

But the Celtics have a game to play Saturday, the opener of their playoff series against the Knicks, and if they can provide a boost to their struggling city with some postseason success, that gives them even more motivation in their rare role as an underdog.

NBA PLAYOFFS: Veterans key for Knicks vs. Celtics

NEW YORK (AP) -- Nobody is laughing quite as much at the New York Knicks' roster right now.

Doc Rivers never did.

New York's strategy of loading up on older players was risky and frequently mocked, but not by people who believe veterans make a difference in the postseason.

"I thought it was a very good strategy actually, just because of now," Rivers said.

Celtics putting more focus on getting Garnett the ball

NEW YORK - The New York Knicks not only expect a Boston adjustment, they can guess what it is.

The Celtics never could have accomplished so much over the last six years with as little as they got from Kevin Garnett on Saturday in their playoff opener.

So when the teams return to Madison Square Garden on Tuesday for Game 2, Boston plans to feature much more of Garnett, along with the usual dose of Paul Pierce.

NBA PLAYOFFS: Garnett will play in Game 3

BOSTON (AP) — Kevin Garnett walked over to the Boston bench, nursing a sore hip and Celtics coach Doc Rivers asked repeatedly if his big man needed a break.

It was going to take more than that to knock Garnett out of the playoffs.

“He’s good. He’s good to go,” Rivers said Wednesday during a conference call with reporters. “He’ll practice tomorrow, and he’ll play on Friday.”

NBA PLAYOFFS: Finally home, Celts hope for a boost

WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) -- The Celtics need a pick-me-up after losing the opening two games of their first-round playoff series against the New York Knicks. The city of Boston could use one, too, after a traumatic two weeks of bombings and manhunts and grieving.

NBA PLAYOFFS: Celtics on the brink
By BRIAN MAHONEY

WALTHAM, Mass. — Hanging on a wall of the Celtics’ practice facility, opposite the faded banners that hung in the old Boston Garden a half-century ago, is a spotless one.

It went up a few years ago to hold the location where the NBA’s greatest champions would mark their next title.

That banner will apparently remain blank another year. As soon as Sunday, the Celtics’ quest for No. 18 could be over for this season.

Down 3-0 to the New York Knicks, the Celtics are thinking much smaller than another title when they host Game 4 on Sunday
