Claws begin playoffs at the Expo
Rio Grande opts to play Maine in the D-League playoffs, and it all starts Thursday in Portland.

By Kevin Thomas

PORTLAND - The first-ever Maine Red Claws playoff game will be Thursday night at the Portland Expo.

The Red Claws qualified for the NBA D-League playoffs for the first time in their four-year existence. They will play the Rio Grande Valley Vipers at 7 p.m. Thursday, in the first game of a best-of-three series.

The series will then move to Hidalgo, Texas for the second game Saturday at 8 p.m. and, if necessary, a third game Monday night.

Red Claws ready for D-League playoff debut
By Kalle Oakes

To say that life in the NBA Development League changes from day-to-day probably isn't exact enough. Hour-to-hour is more like it.

So perhaps it was fitting that the Maine Red Claws lost their final game of the regular season to Erie on Saturday night, then had to wait about 60 minutes for Iowa to surprise Sioux Falls and seal Maine's first-ever playoff berth.

Game 1 of 3 game series..

NBADL: Red Claws' comeback falls short
By Randy Whitehouse

PORTLAND — Despite public pronouncements to the contrary prior to the first playoff series in team history, the Maine Red Claws wanted Thursday night's first-round opener with Rio Grande Valley to develop into a track meet.

The game did, but the Red Claws were still left asking for the race to last just a few more meters.

Eighth-seeded Maine nearly erased a 21-point deficit, but ultimately came up short in a 120-118 loss before 2,348 at the Portland Expo.

Red Claws need Texas two-step
Step one would be tying the series Saturday against Rio Grande Valley, step two would be taking the series.

By Steve Craig

To a man, the Maine Red Claws know exactly what they must do Saturday night in Hidalgo, Texas, to have a chance of beating the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in Game 2 of their D-League quarterfinal series:

Play like they did in the fourth quarter of Thursday night's 120-118 loss at the Portland Expo in Game 1.

Maine outscored the Central Division champion Vipers 41-26 in the final quarter.
