Garoppolo mostly solid in debut as Pats beat Saints 34-22

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Jimmy Garoppolo made his preseason debut, spreading the ball around for 168 yards, and Jamie Collins added a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown as the New England Patriots beat the New Orleans Saints 34-22 on Thursday night.

Garoppolo played the entire first half as he preps to start the first four games of the regular season in place of Tom Brady, who will be serving a suspension for his involvement in the "Deflategate" case. Brady was not in the building Thursday, excused by the team to attend memorial services for a family member.

Rob Gronkowski injury scare not what we need

FOXBORO — Having Rob Gronkowski pull up on a Tom Brady pass, then hobble over to the sideline, and leave the field a short time later with head trainer Jim Whalen did not make anyone with a rooting interest in the Patriots feel particularly good during yesterday’s joint practice session with the Bears.

Just the visual alone of Gronk, distressed to the point of taking himself off the field, made those in attendance let out a collective groan.

Pats’ Gronkowski leaves practice with apparent injury

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski pulled up with a possible injury while running a route during Monday’s joint practice with the Chicago Bears. According to ESPN.com, Gronkowski took himself out after going for a pass from quarterback Tom Brady in 7-on-7 drills along the sideline. The severity of …

Martellus Bennett keeps media at bay, declines interviews

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Since the New England Patriots acquired tight end Martellus Bennett from the Chicago Bears in March, some have asked how Bennett would fit into the team's culture. Known to speak what's on his mind, as evidenced by a recent ESPN The Magazine piece when he was critical of Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, would Bennett fully buy in?

The greatest potential for fireworks has come over the last two days as the Patriots and Bears have met for joint practices at Gillette Stadium.

In perhaps a statement that he doesn't want to be the story, Bennett -- somewhat out of character -- has declined all media interviews this week. On Tuesday, he lingered on the field for about 30 minutes after practice as reporters waited for him, only to wave them off as he walked to the locker room.

Bryan Stork fights to win center job, and that’s the bad news

FOXBORO — David Andrews has been in control of the center competition for nearly three weeks, and Bryan Stork probably didn’t help his cause during yesterday’s joint practice with the Chicago Bears.

Stork was thrown out for starting a fight, as he head-butted linebacker John Timu before aggressively shoving linebacker Sam Acho during an 11-on-11 period. Bill Belichick immediately sent Stork to the locker room, which falls in line with his zero-tolerance policy on fighting in practice.

This has become a pattern for Stork, who was flagged for unnecessary roughness when he head-butted Broncos defensive lineman Vance Walker during the AFC Championship Game loss in January. The first-down penalty put the Pats in a hole they couldn’t escape, as they ultimately went three-and-out while trailing 7-0 in the opening quarter.

Patriots’ Butler learning lessons in joint practices

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts — Cornerback Malcolm Butler is a Super Bowl hero and a Pro Bowler. He is established as New England’s No. 1 left cornerback in just his third season. But the young player continues to take his lumps at times on the practice field. Last week he admitted that …

5 things to watch in Patriots’ game vs. Bears

After three joint practices, two of which got nasty, the Patriots and Bears don’t have to hold back on one another during Thursday’s preseason matchup at Gillette Stadium. It might remain testy between the players, but it’d be a shock if any of them risked an ejection with another fight. More importantly, here are the five biggest football-related storylines to monitor in the Pats’ second exhibition game.

1. Same ole story: Bill Belichick reiterated this week it’s the Patriots’ “priority” to get Jimmy Garoppolo ready for the regular-season opener, which is now in 24 days. Garoppolo worked with the backups during Monday’s joint practice with the Bears and completed 13 of 18 passes in team drills. He ran with the starters Tuesday and was 9 of 16. Tom Brady led off during Wednesday’s walkthrough, which might be a sign he’ll start Thursday. Brady has been Brady throughout camp, so there’s no need to overextend him in the preseason, which leads to the question of Garoppolo’s playing time against the Bears. Garoppolo needs the work, and he absolutely needs it with other starters on the field, and that includes his offensive teammates and defensive counterparts. It’d be advantageous for Garoppolo to check into the game as early as possible.
