Patriots back Brady in Deflategate court appeal

NEW YORK — The New England Patriots on Wednesday urged a U.S. appeals court to reconsider its decision to reinstate Tom Brady’s “Deflategate” four-game suspension, saying its star quarterback faced “unprecedented, unjustified and unsupported penalties.” The Patriots, in court papers, backed an appeal by Brady and National Football league players …

Patriots alumni plug organization’s winning formula during clinic at Husson

BANGOR, Maine — The New England Patriots have been a model of consistency in the National Football League. Over the past 16 seasons, the Patriots have appeared in 10 AFC championship games and six Super Bowls, winning four of them.

It is a blueprint for success, according to former Patriots center Pete Brock and linebacker Steve King. Both were on hand at the free “Football for You” clinic for children ages 11-14 on Tuesday at Husson University’s Boucher Field.

It was put on by the New England Patriots’ Alumni Association of which Brock is the president.

Brady’s Deflategate appeal denied, suspension stands
The New England Patriots quarterback can still ask the U.S. Supreme Court to consider his case.

... Brady has 90 days to file a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court to hear his appeal, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Sources close to Brady’s legal team told ESPN’s Mike Reiss on Wednesday that the denied appeal was the expected result and that no final decision has been made concerning the next step.

“We wish the result were otherwise, but respect and understand the decision and know that it is extremely rare for the Second Circuit to grant en banc review,” Anthony Barkow, a lawyer who submitted an amicus brief on behalf of longtime arbitrator Kenneth R. Feinberg, told the Associated Press.

Patriots notebook: Jamie Collins a surprise MIA on first day of camp

FOXBORO — Of the nine Patriots who missed the opening practice of training camp yesterday, there was only one surprise, and it was a big one.

Linebacker Jamie Collins was absent for unspecified reasons. He participated throughout the offseason workout program and wasn’t placed on any injury lists to open camp, so there haven’t been any disclosed ailments.

Collins did report to Gillette Stadium this week, so it seems highly unlikely he would have had a drastic change of heart and decided to hold out over a contract dispute. Collins, of course, is in the final season of his rookie deal and is only set to earn $917,865 in cash in 2016. He could be viewed as one of the most underpaid defensive players in the NFL.

But for now, it might be wise to view Collins’ absence as something simply worth monitoring unless a string of absences pushes through the weekend.

Guregian: LeGarrette Blount to carry big load for Patriots

FOXBORO — After watching Tom Brady take a pounding last season, it made a lot of sense to think the Patriots would add a power back to help ease the load on their soon-to-be 39-year-old quarterback.

The need seemed especially urgent given LeGarrette Blount’s exit last year with a season-ending hip injury and the extensive rehab facing Dion Lewis following his reconstructive knee surgery.

In the end, Bill Belichick wasn’t compelled to make a move, and instead is once again rolling the dice with Blount, who was on the field for the first day of training camp after missing all of the spring camps.

That being said, with Brady out the first four games, the importance of having a running game is that much more significant to help minimize the pressure on Jimmy Garoppolo and keep defenses honest.

The value of having a guy who can pick up those tough yards in a pinch is magnified even more.

Can Blount still be that guy?
