Patriots running backs now an embarrassment of riches

FOXBORO — After finishing last season with no semblance of a running game, the Patriots now have an embarrassment of riches in their backfield.

As we’ve seen, they can hit you with force, finesse or speed depending on the opponent and situation.

It’s a nice combination to have, especially this time of year. The Denver Broncos, who sport one of the worst run defenses in the league, might have been preparing to get banged and bruised by 1,000-yard rusher LeGarrette Blount last week, but instead they got a healthy dose of shifty Dion Lewis, who had 95 yards on 18 carries during the Pats’ 16-3 victory on Sunday.

Patriots annihilate Jets behind another outstanding defensive effort

This one was never close. The Patriots jumped ahead early, and the Jets quickly looked like a team who wished they were roasting chestnuts on an open fire — or at least listening to music about roasting chestnuts on an open fire. The Patriots, on the other hand, looked like a team poised to lock up the No. 1 playoff seed. And that’s what they did.

It was an outstanding defensive effort. The defense’s four turnovers gave the Patriots a number of short-field drives. Bo Patriots’ skill player had more than 90 yards, because there weren’t yards to be had. Tom Brady threw for just 214 yards (and three touchdowns). It’s strange to say a defense won a 41-3 rout, but they did. Malcolm Butler (two interceptions, one fumble recovery) was an absolute beast.

Patriots, Dolphins have plenty to play for

The AFC playoff combatants have all been determined, but positioning is still an issue to be resolved as the NFL regular season wraps up this weekend.

If the Patriots beat the Dolphins on Sunday, they will own home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs based on having the conference’s best record. However, if the Patriots lose and the Oakland Raiders defeat the Denver Broncos, the Raiders would own the No. 1 seed due to a better record against common opponents.

McCourty: 'As a football team, there is no on-and-off switch'

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots safety Devin McCourty said something that resonated on Wednesday, and it highlights what seems to be the main difference between this year's season finale against the Miami Dolphins compared to last year.

"I just think as a football team, there is no on-and-off switch. You can't just decide when you want to play," McCourty said.

In the words of Patriots Hall of Famer Troy Brown, "Bingo! He's got bingo!"

Patriots’ win over Dolphins locks up home-field advantage

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — There were, at least by definition, two playoff teams on the field yesterday at Hard Rock Stadium.

That figures to bode well for the Patriots, who sank the Miami Dolphins, 35-14, to lock up home-field advantage in the playoffs. They won their 14th regular-season game for the fifth time in franchise history, improved to 4-0 against AFC playoff opponents and went 11-1 with Tom Brady at quarterback.

Amendola's return sparks question on how Pats will handle WRs

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots veteran wide receiver/punt returner Danny Amendola was back at practice Wednesday for the first time since injuring his ankle Dec. 4 against the Los Angeles Rams, and his return sparks a question as to how the team will proceed with its personnel in the playoffs.

After carrying just four pure receivers on the roster for the first 14 weeks of the season and playing with just three in some December games, the Patriots are positioned to have five solid options in the playoffs: Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, Amendola and Michael Floyd.

The primary questions are:

Does Floyd's emergence make it more challenging to carve out a spot for Amendola on the 46-man game-day roster as a No. 4 or 5 receiver?

Patriots among biggest playoff favorites of past 40 years

The New England Patriots are the biggest playoff favorites since 1998.

The Patriots opened as 14.5-point favorites against the Houston Texans in Saturday's AFC divisional playoff game at Gillette Stadium.

The line quickly grew to New England -16 shortly after being posted Sunday afternoon at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook, making it one of the four largest playoff point spreads in the past 40 seasons.

Texans May Keep Game Close Vs. New England Patriots

'Without turnovers,' Texans owner Robert McNair said after the game [vs. the Raiders,] 'we can play with anybody.'

We'll come back to this theory a bit later.

I should have titled this article, 'don't be fooled by Brock Osweiler's $72M Deal, he's not a good quarterback.' At this point in the season, I'm confident you already know that.

Amendola 'getting ready' for playoffs

For more than a month, Danny Amendola has been sidelined with a right ankle injury. He suffered it in Week 13 while fielding a punt against the Los Angeles Rams.

Last week, though, he finally returned to practice and looks poised to make a return to game action this Saturday night when the Patriots host the Houston Texans.

“Whatever Coach [Bill Belichick] wants me to do,” was all the veteran wide receiver would say when asked directly if he will suit up for the Divisional Playoff Game.

Patriots vs. Texans playoff prediction roundup

It isn’t the Patriots’ fault. But this is a waste of time.

Ho. Hum. Here come the Houston Texans for a divisional playoff game matchup in New England, and Gillette Stadium season ticket holders are treating it like just another September game against the likes of the Jacksonville Jaguars. They might have had better luck unloading preseason passes than they might for this anticipated wreck.
