Source: Ex-Michigan QB Devin Gardner signing with Pats to play WR

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Former Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner, who is converting to wide receiver, is signing with New England as an undrafted free agent, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The 6-foot-3½, 218-pound Gardner joins a Patriots team that already has successfully converted one quarterback into a wide receiver: Julian Edelman.

Quick-hit thoughts around the Patriots, NFL

Quick-hit thoughts around the New England Patriots and NFL:

1. With the Packers visiting the Patriots in the preseason opener, my hope was that the two teams might hold joint practices at Gillette Stadium in the days leading up to the game. It would have been a highlight to see Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers sharing the same field and to watch two of the NFL's top coaches, Bill Belichick and Mike McCarthy, team up to run a practice. But I'm told that's highly unlikely to happen. The main reason is that the Packers, a publicly-owned franchise, are sensitive to the impact the team has on the local community and how reducing the number of training-camp practices open to the public -- which fans annually plan summer vacations around -- would be received.

Winners and losers from the New England Patriots' draft

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Picking some winners and losers for the New England Patriots in the wake of their 11-player draft class:

Winner: Logan Ryan, Alfonzo Dennard, cornerbacks

Why: With the Patriots not selecting a cornerback until the seventh round, that's good news for players like Ryan and Dennard, who are part of a group that will compete to fill the sizable void created by the departures of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner.

Loser: Michael Buchanan, defensive end..

Eleven takeaways from 11 Patriots draft picks

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots had a busy three-day stretch in the NFL draft by picking 11 players. As part of media coverage, a conference call with each draft pick was coordinated by the team, and here's the biggest takeaway from each of them.

First round: DT Malcom Brown (32nd overall). He came across as humble, showed a sense of humor, and then let his guard down by expressing confidence when asked if he had a message for the team's fans. "You’re about to get the best player you’ve ever drafted," he said.

Patriots rookie pool: $6.639 million

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Now that the New England Patriots have drafted 11 players, the next step in the process is signing them all to contracts. That shouldn't be too difficult based on the slotting of contracts, but it's still notable for those who track the team's salary cap and cash commitments.

Along those lines, the Patriots have been given a rookie pool allotment of $6.639 million to sign their 11 picks, which is the 11th highest total among NFL teams.

The following is the breakdown of Patriots draft picks and their year-1 rookie allocation:

Nate Solder, Patriots OL move on to second phase of offseason program

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots offensive linemen have entered "Phase 2" this week -- both in the offseason program and in their familiarity with offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo.

Allow left tackle Nate Solder to explain.

"We're [now] allowed to do a little bit more on-the-field work with our coaches [this week]," Solder said Tuesday at Gillette Stadium. "So we're getting through some basic teamwork and stuff like that. It changes our schedule a little bit, but more than that, it's just getting with a group of guys, running through some plays, getting some coaching on plays -- more football-oriented stuff."

Comparing where Patriots land in various power rankings

As is the norm a few days after the NFL draft, there is a new round of "power rankings" to digest among various media platforms.

The rankings are reflective of public perception at this time and I thought it would be interesting to line them up from a New England Patriots perspective.

ESPN.com: Second. The Seahawks land the top spot. "The Patriots used the draft to bulk up the offensive and defensive lines, drafting six linemen in the first five rounds. The average weight of the Patriots' first seven picks was 276 pounds."

NFL says Patriots probably deflated the balls in AFC title game

The New England Patriots probably deliberately deflated the footballs to gain an advantage in the AFC title game in January, and quarterback Tom Brady was “at least generally aware” of the scheme, the National Football League said Wednesday. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league would consider possible disciplinary action …
