Breaking down Patriots offensive snaps

LANDOVER, Md. -- A breakdown of snaps played by offensive players in the New England Patriots' 23-6 preseason opening loss to the Washington Redskins on Thursday night:

Offensive line
LT/LG Jordan Devey -- 56 of 56 (first and second half)
C Dan Connolly -- 29 of 56 (first half)
RG Josh Kline -- 29 of 56 (first half)
LT Nate Solder -- 29 of 56 (first half)
LG Chris Barker -- 27 of 56 (second half)
RT Cameron Fleming -- 27 of 56 (second half)
RG Jon Halapio -- 27 of 56 (second half)
RT Marcus Cannon -- 24 of 56 (first half)
C Ryan Wendell -- 20 of 56 (second half)
C Braxston Cave -- 7 of 56 (second half)
TE/RT Sebastian Vollmer -- 6 of 56 (first half)

Quick-hit thoughts: Valuable reps for Devey, a first-year player from Memphis who spent last season on the practice squad and has been working at tackle, guard and center in training camp. Rookie center Bryan Stork (fourth round, Florida State) has been sidelined since the fifth practice of training camp, as he would normally be in this mix.

Quarterbacks
Ryan Mallett -- 29 of 56 (first half)

Quick-hit thoughts around NFL, Patriots

Quick-hit thoughts around the NFL and with the New England Patriots:

1. Rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s debut in the Patriots’ preseason opener was widely praised; his quick release and long-ball touch two areas most noted. But there was something else that might be more important, and it came on running back Stephen Houston’s fumble when Garoppolo darted into a scrum as others were standing around and relentlessly threw himself into the pile in hopes of recovering the football. Usually you don’t want your quarterback vulnerable to injury in a pile of 300-pounds-plus linemen, but this is a rare situation that I think is an exception. When players and coaches review the film and see a rookie at that position making that type of effort and being ripped out of the pile by opponents, it can only yield one reaction: Instant respect. Playing quarterback in the NFL requires so many different things, and one of them is leading in a way that makes others want to follow them; Garoppolo’s presence has stood out to me in that regard, with Thursday night’s effort further reinforcing it...

Patriots waive three, sign three

The New England Patriots have waived undrafted rookie tight ends Asa Watson and Justin Jones and running back Stephen Houston, according to a league source. In corresponding moves, the team has signed a trio of tight ends: veterans Ben Hartsock and Steve Maneri and 2014 undrafted free agent Terrence Miller...

Observations from Patriots camp: Day 18

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Observations from the New England Patriots' 12th practice of training camp, which was held in full pads on a hot afternoon on the fields behind Gillette Stadium:

New absences: Quarterback Ryan Mallett; linebacker James Anderson; defensive linemen Chris Jones and Sealver Siliga. Mallett had extended work last week and it should also be noted that he has been wearing a brace over his left knee and had an awkward slide in Thursday's preseason opener. Jones (left ankle) and Siliga (left hand) were injured last week.

Who returned:

Rob Gronkowski: 'No setbacks'

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski said his absence from the team's joint practices and exhibition game against the Washington Redskins last week is not a reason to be concerned about his surgically repaired right knee.

"Improving every single week so far," Gronkowski said after returning to Sunday's full-pads practice. "No setbacks or anything like that. Going out there and feeling better every single time I'm out there on the field."

Patriots Camp Report: Day 18
T
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of New England Patriots training camp:

The Patriots turned over the bottom of their tight end depth chart, waiving undrafted rookies Justin Jones and Asa Watson, and signing veterans Ben Hartsock and Steve Maneri, and undrafted rookie Terrence Miller. Bill Belichick explained the moves this way: "We’re looking for guys that are improving and kind of when they stop making improvement, then sometimes you feel like you’ve got to move on. We signed three players that we feel like will be competitive, but we’ll see."

New England Patriots' projected roster

Examining the New England Patriots' roster:

QUARTERBACKS (3)
Tom Brady
Ryan Mallett
Jimmy Garoppolo
Still think Mallett enters the year as the No. 2, giving Garoppolo valuable time to learn behind the scenes.

RUNNING BACKS (4)
Shane Vereen
James White
Stevan Ridley
Brandon Bolden

Ryan Mallett misses 2nd straight practice

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett was not present for Monday's practice, marking the second straight day he's been absent. Mallett, who wore a brace over his left knee in Thursday's preseason opener against Washington, slid awkwardly on a first-quarter running play and immediately looked down at the brace.

It is unclear if the reason for Mallett's absence from practice is related to his left knee.

Observations from Patriots camp: Day 19

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Observations from the New England Patriots' 13th practice of training camp, which was held in light shoulder pads and shorts and was open to the public (temperatures in the mid-80s):

Eyes on Solder and the offensive line: After fourth-year left tackle Nate Solder struggled in joint practices with the Redskins, and then in the preseason opener, it's been notable that he has not been working alongside left guard Logan Mankins the past two days. Marcus Cannon has stepped into that role. It has also caught our attention that first-year player Jordan Devey, who started the preseason opener at left guard in place of the rested Mankins, has worked as the top right guard the past two days. Devey could be an under-the-radar player to keep an eye on in the coming weeks...

Patriots Camp Report: Day 19

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of New England Patriots training camp:

Big news in the health department highlighted the day. Tight end Rob Gronkowski and cornerback Alfonzo Dennard took steps in their progression from offseason surgery, as both participated in 7-on-7 drills for the first time. Gronkowski wore a red non-contact jersey, while Dennard did not. Meanwhile, receiver Aaron Dobson was activated off the physically unable to perform list and 2014 first-round draft choice Dominique Easley was activated off the non-football-injury list. For the second straight practice, No. 2 quarterback Ryan Mallett ...
