Patriots Camp Report: Day 14

RICHMOND, Va. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of New England Patriots training camp: The Patriots and Redskins capped off their three-day stretch of joint practices with a light walk-through practice. Washington coach Jay Gruden said he expects his starters to play about 8-10 plays in the preseason opener for the teams Thursday night, and the educated guess is that the Patriots will follow a similar script. Following the Wednesday morning practice in Richmond, the Patriots boarded their buses and headed about 120 miles north to FedEx Field, where Thursday's game will be held...

W2W4: New England Patriots

LANDOVER, Md. -- The New England Patriots (0-0) and Washington Redskins (0-0) open their preseason schedules Thursday night at FedEx Field.

First exposure to referees and point of emphasis on illegal contact and defensive holding. While some teams have had referees in their training camps, such as Washington, the Patriots have not. So Thursday night's game, with referee Jeff Triplette overseeing the action, will mark the first time the Patriots are exposed to the "third team" on the field. This is significant as the league is making it a point of emphasis to enforce defensive holding and illegal contact rules extra closely. Defensive backs such as Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner can make contact within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage, but anything after 5 yards is a penalty and Redskins players said they thought the Patriots were regularly making contact down the field in practices. How many of those penalties are called against the Patriots on Thursday night..

Ups and downs for the Patriots

LANDOVER, Md. -- At an initial glance, a look at who's up and who's down for the New England Patriots in their preseason opener against the Washington Redskins: Up Ryan Allen -- One of team's best plays of the night came on an Allen punt downed at the 1-yard line in the second quarter. Malcolm Butler -- Undrafted cornerback from West Alabama is competitive in coverage in the end zone and down the field, showing good ball skills...

Observation deck: New England Patriots

LANDOVER, Md. -- One should always be cautious of reading too much into a preseason game, especially one in which a team rested as many top players as the New England Patriots did in their loss to the Washington Redskins on Thursday night. So let's just stick to the basic fundamentals of football: If you don't block, you usually don't win. Patriots followers need no reminder of this, as last season's AFC Championship Game was the most recent reminder of what happens when the offensive line doesn't hold up its end of the bargain. Super Bowl XLII against the New York Giants was another...

Tale of two backup QBs for Patriots

LANDOVER, Md. -- Through the first 11 practices of training camp, the New England Patriots' backup quarterback competition had seemed clear cut to many observers. Rocket-armed Ryan Mallett was the No. 2, with rookie Jimmy Garoppolo enduring some rocky moments. The picture has been altered a bit after the Patriots’ preseason-opening 23-6 loss to the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field on Thursday night...

Belichick, players react to preseason loss

LANDOVER, Md. -- Veteran New England Patriots defensive tackle Tommy Kelly in now in his 11th NFL season, so he knows not to overreact to one preseason loss in which many key players were rested. That's why he mostly kept it light following a 23-6 setback to the Washington Redskins on Thursday night. "You can't win them all. It's a preseason game and these games are to work on your fundamentals and get you ready for the regular season," he said. "I don't foresee us having these same problems by the time we get to Miami [in the season-opener..

Redskins-Patriots: Ten Observations

LANDOVER, Md. -- Ten thoughts and observations from the Washington Redskins' 23-6 preseason opening win over the New England Patriots:
The Patriots had quite a few starters who did not play, so you can't go overboard with what the Redskins did Thursday night. No parades down Constitution Avenue just yet. Really, it wasn't about the fact that they won -- it's meaningless -- but rather how the Redskins went about playing. They wanted to establish an identity and did so on both sides, playing physical on offense in particular. The Redskins won't become playoff contenders off this game, but if they start establishing a mindset, if they tackle like they did Thursday, then it's a good start. They took care of New England's backups, for the most part, and it sure beats the alternative for them..

Leftover thoughts from Patriots' loss

LANDOVER, Md. -- A few leftover thoughts from the New England Patriots' 23-6 preseason-opening loss to the Washington Redskins: Monitoring the competition at center. The rotation was notable, as incumbent Ryan Wendell played solely the second half with the second unit while Dan Connolly got the start at center and played throughout the first half. The Patriots seem to be taking a long look at various combinations, and Connolly -- who was the starting center in 2011 before switching to right guard the past two seasons -- got the initial look of the preseason. Rookie Bryan Stork, the fourth-round pick from Florida State, remains sidelined after sustaining an undisclosed injury in the fifth training camp practice...

Following up on DT Chris Jones' injury

LANDOVER, Md. -- New England Patriots defensive tackle Chris Jones is likely to miss the rest of the preseason with a left ankle injury suffered in Thursday night's preseason opener, according to a source. Jones is to have more tests today on the ankle, but the initial diagnosis is that the injury isn't a season-ending type of situation and that Jones dodged what could have been a more serious injury had it affected his knee...
