Patriots Camp Report: Day 9

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of New England Patriots training camp:

The Patriots had their annual night practice inside Gillette Stadium for season-ticket holders and Foxborough residents, with Bill Belichick saying it was a good chance for players to get used to new FieldTurf that had been installed earlier this year. In addition, Belichick said it was good from a special-teams perspective to get used to playing under the lights. "A lot of energy in the stadium. I think everybody enjoys the environment," Belichick said.
The team announced that 22,886 fans were in attendance, which continued a theme of strong crowds that have been consistent throughout camp...

Patriots football journey: DE Will Smith

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The last three months have represented a new beginning for veteran defensive end Will Smith, who is in his first season with the Patriots after spending the initial 10 seasons of his career with the Saints. “It’s pretty much what I expected,” Smith said after a recent training camp practice. “Obviously, we haven’t played anybody, we’ve just been practicing. But I like the coaching, I like the approach to the game, I like the way everyone practices hard. It’s something I thought would be a good situation, and so far it’s been that way.” ...

Quick-hit thoughts around NFL & Pats

Quick-hit thoughts around the NFL and with the New England Patriots:

1. Tom Brady says he wants to play for a long time, and as he celebrates his 37th birthday today, he’s realized that one of his greater challenges in doing so is how he connects to teammates who are significantly younger than him. "When I came into the league 15 years ago, some [of these players] were 6 or 7 years old, in first grade. You have to find ways to relate to younger players," Brady said last week on Sirius XM NFL Radio. Brady has taken steps in recent years to build those bridges, with one example coming when he invited some of the team’s younger receivers to California to work out with him. When I think back to some of the all-time greats who played into their late 30s like Dan Marino and John Elway, this was one of their greatest challenges as well...

LB James Morris to fill Pats' final spot

The Patriots will fill their final spot on the 90-man man roster with rookie linebacker James Morris of Iowa, Pat Harty of the Iowa Press-Citizen reports. UPDATE: The Patriots announced that they re-signed Morris later Sunday afternoon. Morris had been with the Patriots for four days in May, initially signing a contract that included $20,000 in guaranteed money, which is a significant total for an undrafted player. But the Patriots soon after waived him with a "failed physical" designation.

Patriots, Richmond excited for practices

RICHMOND, Virginia -- The New England Patriots traveled to Richmond on Sunday in advance of three days of joint practices with the Washington Redskins. The visit has generated a buzz in the city. A banner tease across the front page of Sunday's Richmond Times-Dispatch reads "Patriots visit draws national attention." The centerpiece of the Times-Dispatch sports page includes pictures of quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Tom Brady with the headline "Spotlight on the City." ...

Observations from Patriots camp: Day 12

RICHMOND, Va. – Observations from the New England Patriots ninth practice of training camp, which was held in full pads with the Washington Redskins: Throwback feel at joint practice: Safety Devin McCourty said getting off the bus and walking on to the practice field felt a little bit like he was back in high school. McCourty and several other teammates seemed pleased with the work against Washington, with defensive lineman Vince Wilfork saying, “We had no problems. We worked well together. It was a physical practice.” Cornerback Darrelle Revis said he had never practiced against another team but liked the atmosphere. “It’s almost like game speed,” he said. Getting accustomed to the wet practice fields, with grass that wasn’t as long as the Gillette Stadium fields back home, was an adjustments players said they had to make. The heat and humidity rose toward the end of practice...

Patriots Camp Report: Day 12

RICHMOND, Va. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of New England Patriots training camp: Tom Brady is still very, very good. That's probably the biggest takeaway from Monday's initial joint practice with the Washington Redskins as it was clear that one quarterback was at an extremely higher level compared to everyone else on the field. Brady, wearing a protective brace over his left knee perhaps with what happened in last year's joint practice with Tampa Bay in mind, was simply stellar. Washington defenders spoke about how it was a struggle to adjust to the tempo of the Brady-led offense at times, while coach Jay Gruden said one thing that disappointed him was the stamina of his defenders 4-5 reps into a series..

Tom Brady: We don't have all the answers

RICHMOND, Va. -- The New England Patriots offense has received rave reviews in two days of joint practices with the Washington Redskins, but quarterback Tom Brady pumped the brakes a bit on Tuesday. "I think it’s always challenging out there. I don’t think we have everything figured out," Brady said after a near three-hour practice, when told that he sometimes made it look easy in 11-on-11 drills...

Patriots Camp Report: Day 13

RICHMOND, Va. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of New England Patriots training camp: As players ran end-of-practice sprints following a near three-hour practice in 90-degree temperatures, Bill Belichick kept imploring them to dig deeper. "This is where we win -- fourth quarter!" he told them. The big takeaway: The Patriots' conditioning and mental toughness was tested today, as Tom Brady said he couldn't remember the last time he was part of such a long practice...
