PATRIOTS BEAT: A hulking presence on defense
By Mike Lowe

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Maybe all you need to know about Adrian Wilson is that his Twitter avatar is a picture of the Incredible Hulk, the Marvel comic book hero who transforms from a scrawny human to a green-skinned behemoth who gets stronger as he gets madder.

Sure his resume is impressive. Wilson has appeared in five Pro Bowls, ranks third in NFL history in career sacks for a safety (25.5) and is one of five players in NFL history with 25 sacks and 25 interceptions.

Patriots Beat: Who's the man? No. 12, for sure
By Mike Lowe

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - And now you know why New England Patriots fans everywhere panicked or held their breath when Tom Brady went down in practice on Wednesday.

The Patriots are a different, much better, team when the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player is in the game. That was plenty evident in Friday night's preseason 25-21 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Gillette Stadium.

PATRIOTS BEAT — MIKE LOWE: Patriots still coming together
The regular season is a mere two weeks away. How do you feel about the New England Patriots?

Did last Thursday’s 40-9 loss at Detroit cause any concern?

It shouldn’t.

Even though the Patriots were tossed around like rag dolls by the Lions for most of the night, there is no other team in the NFL that responds to adversity like New England.

Dave D'Onofrio's Patriots Notebook: Patriots have choices to make

The exhibition schedule now three-quarters complete, and the real thing but a couple weeks away, much of the evaluation is over. Some can still state their case in practice this week, or in Thursday's final preseason game, though for the most part the evidence is in and decisions are being made about who will pack for Buffalo on Sept. 8 and who will pack their locker and head home.

The first series of those decisions is due Tuesday, when the Patriots must reduce their roster to 75. The harder choices then come Saturday, when the list is pared down to a game-ready number of 53. And as seems to be the way with most things about the Pats these days, it should be pretty interesting to see how it all plays out.

Patriots Beat: Bubbles aplenty will burst come Saturday evening
By Mike Lowe

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The Patriots have a lot of questions to answer in the next couple of days. By 6 p.m. Saturday, they need to have their roster trimmed to 53.

That means 22 players who played Thursday won't be here on Sunday.

Who will they be?

PATRIOTS BEAT: Time running out in fight for job
By Mike Lowe

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- And now, for Bill Belichick, the hard part begins.

Preseason is over, NFL roster's have to be down to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday. And Belichick has to tell 22 players by then that they won't be with the New England Patriots.

Patriots Beat: Mainer's journey through NFL leads to a stop with Patriots
By Mike Lowe

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Matthew Mulligan has learned rather quickly that things happen quickly in the NFL.

You're on one team's roster one week, another team's roster the next.

Mulligan hopes his latest stay is a little longer than his last two. Mulligan, a West Enfield native and graduate of...

Patriots Beat: Short week a tall order in the NFL
By Mike Lowe

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — An NFL season can be grueling and the longer it goes, the harder it gets.

Bodies get battered, minds get weary.

It takes time to recover from the pounding the players take each week. Neither the New England Patriots nor the New York Jets have that time this week.

Patriots Beat: Patriots win but here’s the catch: Receivers are missing
By Mike Lowe
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — These are not your father’s New England Patriots.

Or even your brother’s.

Tom Brady doesn’t have his binkies any more. And the offense is going to suffer.

Wes Welker is gone, hanging out in Denver with Peyton Manning. Deion Branch is gone, waiting for a phone call with a Foxborough area code. Aaron Hernandez is in jail. Rob Gronkowski is hurt...

Patriots Beat: Ugly wins? Yes, but Pats want more time to look their best
By Mike Lowe

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Perceptions.

That's what it's really all about.

The New England Patriots are 2-0, but they're not playing well and could easily be 0-2.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 0-2, but they're playing well and could easily be 2-0.

The Patriots' offense, once one of the most feared in the NFL, is now a shadow of its former self, Tom Brady unable to hook...
