NFL: Lions rough up Brady, Patriots

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions put up a lot of points in beating the New England Patriots on Thursday night.

But most of the talk afterward was about the suddenly stout Lions defense that forced four first-half turnovers en route to a 40-9 victory.

"That's a Hall of Fame quarterback, and we flustered him a little bit," Detroit wide receiver Duane Burleson said about Tom Brady, who threw his first interception of the preseason and led New England to only three points despite playing the entire first half.

NFL PRESEASON: Belichick stresses ball security Pats struggle
BY JIMMY GOLEN

Fumble, punt, fumble, interception, fumble

That's how the New England Patriots started their exhibition game against the Detroit Lions.

It wasn't the back end of the roster playing for a spot on the team, either. These were the starters playing the first half of what is considered the most important tuneup of the preseason:

"Our message has been the same here from Day 1 that ball security is of the highest priority for anybody that handles the ball," Belichick said in a conference call with reporters Friday. "

QB Tim Tebow survives Patriots’ cuts; two moves left

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Tim Tebow is still a member of the New England Patriots — at least for one more day. The Patriots released five players on Monday and made moves on four other players to get down to 77 players on their active roster. They still have to make ...

Patriots focus on football after rough offseason

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — A training camp filled with potential pitfalls went about as smoothly as the New England Patriots could have hoped.

They addressed the Aaron Hernandez situation early, minimized the attention on Tim Tebow and found promising young wide receivers after losing their top two from last season.

PATRIOTS: Last shot to get it right

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- The final exhibition game is usually the time for first stringers to rest.

Not this time for the New York Giants and New England Patriots.

The teams with two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL need to solve their offensive problems tonight as the regular season looms.

"We have to play better," Giants quarterback Eli Manning said. "We have to be better in the red zone and convert on third downs, so there's some room for improvement."

NFL PRESEASON: Tebow, Patriots top Giants
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tim Tebow may have done just enough to make the New England Patriots.

In an up-and-down performance in both teams' last preseason game, the third-string quarterback threw two touchdown passes and one interception and the Patriots beat the New York Giants 28-20 on Thursday night.

He was 6 for 11 for 91 yards and gained 30 yards on six carries for the Patriots (3-1). He also was sacked four times but ended his game with a 9-yard touchdown pass with 6 seconds left.

Ballard among Patriots' cuts
New England releases 10 players, including tight end Jake Ballard, with 12 more cuts still to come.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots released veteran tight ends Jake Ballard and Daniel Fells in the first batch of final cuts.

Now comes the really hard part.
