The NFL will abandon the AFC vs. NFC format that has been in place since 1971.

The league said Wednesday that fan voting will determine the players in the draft pool. The draft will be televised by the NFL Network on Jan. 22. The game will be played Jan. 26 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu

NFL Notebook: Ravens' cornerback gets drug suspension

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Baltimore Ravens cornerback Asa Jackson was suspended without pay for the first eight games of the regular season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances

"My reaction to that is that you've got to follow the rules," Coach John Harbaugh said after practice Friday. "If you don't follow the rules, you get suspended. That's a fair rule, there's no place for that, and he's getting what he deserves. We'll be missing Asa those first eight weeks. Whether he'll be back after that, time will tell."

NFL Notebook: Giants are short at defensive end as Tuck injured

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The New York Giants suddenly have added concern at defensive end.

With Jason Pierre-Paul still recovering from back surgery in early June, the Giants practiced Wednesday with fellow defensive end Justin Tuck sidelined by an undisclosed back problem.

"He's got a tight back," Coach Tom Coughlin said after practice without being specific. "They're just taking the precautions."

Coughlin hopes that Tuck will be able to play Saturday night in New York's exhibition opener at Pittsburgh, but added his condition needs to improve a little....

NFL: Some teams have done away with tackling during training camp
By ROB MAADDI

PHILADELPHIA — DeSean Jackson caught Michael Vick’s pass over the middle, took a couple steps and braced himself for a hit that Kurt Coleman never delivered.

Hard to break the habit.

Jackson and the rest of the Philadelphia Eagles have nothing to worry about this training camp. Tackling is a no-no for coach Chip Kelly.

“We have four preseason games for that,” Kelly said.

NFL Notebook: Manning and Cruz click early for Giants

PITTSBURGH - Eli Manning hit Victor Cruz for a 57-yard touchdown pass and the New York Giants beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 18-13 in the preseason opener for both teams Saturday night.

Cruz slipped by William Gay and Troy Polamalu, then outran Ryan Clark to score on his first reception since signing a $43 million contract in the offseason. Manning finished 2 of 5 for 73 yards. The Giants scored on both drives the offensive starters were in the game.

NFL Notebook: Rookie impresses for Bills in victory
The Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS - Rookie E.J. Manuel threw for 107 yards and broke a 13-13 tie with a 17-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left in the first half Sunday to lead the Buffalo Bills past the Indianapolis Colts 44-20 in an exhibition game.

Manuel was solid not spectacular in his preseason debut.

NFL Notebook: Rookie has a 'brutal' day in bid to start as Jets' QB

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Geno Smith threw one interception, then another. And then, two more.

It wasn't a good performance by the New York Jets' rookie quarterback. At all.

"It was brutal," Coach Rex Ryan said flatly Wednesday. "That was Geno's worst day."

Smith, competing with Mark Sanchez for the starting job, was intercepted four times, including three in 11-on-11 drills. He's still dealing with a sprained right ankle but has looked less hobbled in practice the last few days. Ryan said it's clearly affecting his performance, as well as his fundamentals and being late on some throws.

Jets stay with Sanchez, at least for now
Mark Sanchez will remain the starting quarterback as Geno Smith works through an injury.

NEW YORK - Mark Sanchez is getting another chance to start for the New York Jets.

In the preseason, that is. As for the regular season, this quarterback competition is still far from being settled.

The Jets announced Thursday that Sanchez will start over rookie Geno Smith, who was hobbled a bit this week with a sprained ankle, for the exhibition home game Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

NFL Notebook: Gabbert starts for Jaguars

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Jaguars want and need to see more of quarterback Blaine Gabber

Coach Gus Bradley named Gabbert the starter Thursday, two days before the Jaguars face the New York Jets in their second exhibition game.

Gabbert played the first four series in the team's opener against Miami, completing 5 of 10 passes for 19 yards. He had two passes dropped and another go off a fullback's hands for an interception.

NFL Roundup: Bills rookie QB Manuel sharp yet again

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Rookie EJ Manuel took another step toward securing the Buffalo Bills' starting job, and the defense stuffed the Minnesota Vikings in a 20-16 preseason victory Friday night.

Manuel went 10 of 12 for 92 yards and a touchdown through three series in the second half. He out-shined veteran Kevin Kolb, who went 13 of 21 for 111 yards and an interception in the first half.
