ORONO, Maine -- Former University of Maine all-conference football standout Trevor Bates has signed a free agent contract with the Detroit Lions, as announced by the organization on Wednesday, May 23.

Bates entered the NFL in 2016 after being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the seventh round, 239th overall. Following his time with the Colts, Bates served practice squad stints with the New England Patriots and New York Giants.
Bates, who was selected to the 2015 All-CAA first team, finished his senior season at UMaine second on the team with 57 tackles and led the team with 7.5 sacks. Bates ranked third in the league in tackles for loss (14.5) and third in sacks while adding two pass breakups, a forced fumble and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

A three-time all-conference selection, Bates earned a selection to the 2015 Division-I All-New England Football team as well as an ECAC Division I Football Championship Subdivision All-Star first team honor.

During his time at Maine, Bates played in 46 games, tallying 207 tackles (35 for loss), with 19 sacks three interceptions, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and nine pass breakups.

Belichick wasn't interested in previewing his plans, saying he was focused only on the short term (the team has four more OTAs scheduled for this week, with Thursday's session open to reporters). But obviously, those are the types of plans that would have to be mapped out well in advance, and the most likely possibilities would be leading into the first two preseason games at home -- against Washington and Philadelphia. Word out of Washington is that, barring an unexpected turn, there are no plans in the works, which would leave the Eagles as the most likely scenario. The Patriots and Eagles getting together again after Super Bowl LII, if it happens, could set a training camp attendance record. If any joint practices come to fruition, a more formal announcement would come in the next week or so.

Quick-hit thoughts and notes around the New England Patriots

The original plan was to skim through parts of Michael Lombardi’s soon-to-be-released book “Gridiron Genius,” and pass along a nugget or two with a Patriots and Bill Belichick twist. Then something unexpected happened: I didn’t want to stop reading.

So three days and almost 300 pages later, here were some of the things that most piqued my interest:

Belichick wrote the foreword. He touted the scouting system Lombardi helped create when the two were together in Cleveland (1991-95), noting that the roots of the system are still found across the NFL today. He also credited Lombardi’s knack for finding undervalued talent, citing his pursuit of current Patriots starting center David Andrews -- an undrafted free agent out of Georgia in 2015 -- as one example. Belichick said writing the foreword was a way to thank Lombardi.

The book is centered around Lombardi’s work with Bill Walsh, Al Davis and Belichick -- all three of whom helped transform NFL franchises -- and Lombardi explains his motivation was to show his view of what it takes to build a championship team or business.
