Sea Dogs shutout by the Yard Goats

The Hartford Yard Goats (47-51) won their third straight over the Sea Dogs (44-53) by a final score of 5-0 in front of 7,029 on Saturday night at Hadlock Field.

Almonte allowed just five hits and fanned seven while walking two over seven shutout innings.

Roenis Elias started the game for Portland on an MLB rehab appearance and allowed one run on one hit over 2.2 innings while walking one and striking out one.

Josh Fuentes drove in two runs for Hartford and finished a single shy of the cycle. In the third, he hit a solo homer off of Elias over the Maine Monster to make it 1-0 'Goats. In the seventh, Max White and Fuentes hit back-to-back triples off of Teddy Stankiewicz to extend the lead to 2-0.

Stankiewicz made the piggyback start, entering for Elias in the third inning. Stankiewicz went 5.2 innings in relief and allowed two runs on six hits, he walked two and struck out six.

Hartford added three more runs in the top of the ninth. Anthony Phillips hit an RBI single by off of Trevor Kelley, Omar Carrizales grounded out to plate a run, then Brendan Rodgers hit an infield single that hit off of a leaping Kelley's glove and deflected past the shortstop Chad De La Guerra to allow Phillips to score from second base.

Sunday Funday for the 'Dogs, beat the Goats 13-1


Portland, Maine - The Sea Dogs (46-53) led wire-to-wire and took the series finale over the Hartford Yard Goats (47-52) 13-2 in front of a sellout crowd on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Hartford took the series, three games to two.

Portland led 2-1 entering the fifth inning and scored eight times with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Portland sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning and had four hits to go along with four walks. It marked the second time this season the 'Dogs had scored eight runs in an inning.

Dedgar Jimenez (1-0) earned the victory in his Double-A debut for Portland. Jimenez allowed one run on two hits in five innings, he walked five and struck out three.

Michael Chavis gave the Sea Dogs the early lead with an RBI double in the first off of Luis Niebla (1-5). Mike Olt hit his 14th home run of the season on the first pitch Niebla threw in the second inning to make it 2-0 Portland.

Correlle Prime hit an RBI single to score Brian Mundell to put Hartford on the board in the fourth.

In the Sea Dogs' big fifth inning, Jeremy Barfield got the scoring started with a two-run homer over the Maine Monster with two outs. Henry Urrutia followed with a double, then Olt, Josh Tobias, and Jordan Procyshen each walked and another run scored. Danny Mars drilled a two-run single, then Cole Sturgeon hit a three-run homer off of David Holman to complete the eight-run frame.

Sturgeon also robbed Ashley Graeter of a home run with a leaping catch against the wall in right-center field to end the top of the fifth that would have given Hartford a 3-2 lead.

Olt drove in two more runs in the ninth on a triple off the right field wall. Olt finished a double shy of the cycle. Jordan Procyshen singled in Olt for the Sea Dogs' 13th run.

Taylor Grover, Jake Cosart, and Ty Buttrey combined to pitch the final four innings, with Hartford scoring just one against Buttrey in the ninth. The 11-run margin of victory was the largest for the Sea Dogs this season.

The Portland Sea Dogs open up a seven-game roadtrip on Monday night, taking on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays affiliate) at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. LHP Trey Ball (3-9, 5.42) makes the start for Portland. RHP Jon Harris (5-9, 5.19) is on the mound for the New Hampshire. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Two-out runs does the trick! 'Dogs beat 'Cats 8-4

Manchester, NH - The Portland Sea Dogs (46-53) scored five runs with two outs in the sixth inning and defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (41-60), 8-4, Monday night in the series opener at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Portland trailed 4-1, but finished the game by scoring seven unanswered runs. The Sea Dogs have won two straight, scoring 21 total runs since Sunday.

LHP Trey Ball (4-9) allowed four runs on 11 hits, but earned the win for the Sea Dogs. New Hampshire received all 4 RBI by Harold Ramirez on a sac-fly and a three-run homer.

Portland beat John Straka (1-2), who allowed five runs on seven hits over two innings pitched. In the sixth, Chad De La Guerra nailed an RBI double to tie the game. Michael Chavis had the game-winning RBI with a single and Jeremy Barfield launched a 3-run homer. Barfield has 13 homers in just 55 games with Portland.

The Sea Dogs bullpen tossed four scoreless innings. Williams Jerez pitched two frames on two hits and Bobby Poyner closed out the win with two perfect innings.

Portland's entire lineup had at least one hit, as Jake Romanski tied a season-high with three hits.

Barfield homers again in 'Dogs 6-4 win

Manchester, NH - Jeremy Barfield homered for the fourth straight game, leading the Portland Sea Dogs (47-54) to a 6-4 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (42-61) on Wednesday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Portland won the series, taking two of the three from the 'Cats.

LHP Henry Owens (2-3) earned the win for Portland, tossing five strong innings on just three hits, one run, three walks and five strikeouts. Owens has allowed just three runs in his last 11 innings pitched.

Portland scored six runs off losing pitcher Sean Reid-Foley (7-8) in the first 2 innings. Reid-Foley yielded eight hits and six runs (four earned) over 6 IP.

Barfield put Portland on the board with a sacrifice fly during a three-run first. The first-year Sea Dog hit a three-run blast in the second inning. The Sea Dogs scored five of six runs with two outs.

Jacob Dahlstand worked three scoreless on just one hit and fanned two. Jake Cosart pitched the ninth, allowing three runs (one earned).

The Portland Sea Dogs and continue their seven-game roadtrip on Thursday night against the Harrisburg Senators (Nationals affiliate). RHP Teddy Stankiewicz makes the start in the series opener against Harrisburg's RHP Austin Voth. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

Monge two hits in Portland's 4-3 loss at Harrisburg

Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg Senators (43-60) countered a two-run eighth by Portland by scoring twice off Trevor Kelley (0-1), defeating the Sea Dogs (47-55), 4-3, Thursday night at FNB Field. Portland has lost three straight to Harrisburg and drops to 2-2 on their seven-game roadtrip.

Trailing 2-1 entering top of the eighth inning, Portland took 3-2 lead off Derek Self (W, 2-2). Joseph Monge (2-for-3, 2B) tied the game with a solo-homer (#2) to left-center field. Cole Sturgeon (2-for-4) doubled an scored on a double by Michael Chavis.

In Harrisburg's eighth inning, they put together three straight one-out singles to tie the game 3-3. Yadiel Hernandez (2-for-3, 2 RBI) delivered the game-winning RBI with a sacrifice fly off Bobby Poyner.

Andrew Robinson pitched the ninth, working around a two-out single by Josh Tobias to earn his fourth save of the season.

Teddy Stankiewicz (ND) was outstanding for Portland, earning his 10th quality start of the year. Stankiewicz pitched six innings on two runs, seven hits, two walks and fanned six. Harrisburg's Austin Voth (ND) left the game with the lead, tossing six innings on one run, five hits and six strikeouts.

The Sea Dogs and Harrisburg Senators (Nationals affiliate) continue their four-game series on Friday night at FNB Field. LHP Dedgar Jimenez (1-0, 1.80) makes his second Double-A start for Portland. RHP Taylor Hill gets the start for Harrisburg. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.

A doubleheader sweep at Harrisburg

Harrisburg, PA - The Portland Sea Dogs (49-55) played their 12th doubleheader of the year on Saturday night and it was successful. The Sea Dogs won game one 9-3 and completed the doubleheader sweep of the Harrisburg Senators (43-62) with an 8-3 win in the nightcap. Henry Urrutia hit a 3-run homer in both games.

Game 1 Recap

Michael Chavis gave the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run homer, his eighth of the season. Jose Marmolejos responded, blasting a three-run shot off Dedgar Jimenez (W, 2-0), but the Sea Dogs scored seven unanswered runs, all with two outs.

Portland took the lead for good in the second inning. Denier Lopez tied the game with a single and Cole Sturgeon nailed a game-winning RBI double. During a five-run fourth inning, Henry Urrutia blasted a three-run homer off the video board in right, his first homer in the Red Sox system.

Jimenez has wins in both Double-A starts, working five innings on three runs. Williams Jerez closed out the win with two scoreless.


Game 2 Recap

Trey Ball (5-9) hurled his second career complete game, both this month, leading Portland to an 8-3 win. Ball tied a season-high with seven strikeouts, yielding three runs on eight hits.

Danny Mars gave the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring single in the second. Jeremy Barfield hit the first of two homers in the third inning.

Harrisburg's Dan Gamache tied the game with a two-run single in the fourth, but Ball stranded two runners on base. In the fifth, Portland scored four times on a wild pitch a three-run shot by Urrutia. Barfield added a two-run homer in the seventh.

The Sea Dogs and Senators wrap-up their four-game series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:30 PM start at FNB Field. RHP Elih Villanueva (4-3, 8.10) makes his 10th start of the season for Portland. LHP Matthew Crownover (0-5, 5.55) gets the start for Harrisburg.

Sea Dogs rally falls short, 11-9 loss at Harrisburg

Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg Senators (44-62) scored eight 2-out runs, defeating the Portland Sea Dogs (49-56), 11-9, Sunday afternoon at FNB Field. Portland finished 4-3 on their seven-game roadtrip.

In the ninth, the Sea Dogs scored a two-out run on a strikeout, as the catcher Raudy Read committed a throwing error on Josh Tobias. Danny Mars represented the winning run and flied out to end the game.

The Sea Dogs struck early against Matthew Crownover (1-5), as Henry Urrutia (4-for-5) nailed a two-run single. In the second, Danny Bethea hit a two-out solo homer, his first of the season and third of his Double-A career.

Crownover earned his first Double-A win, working 5.1 innings on five hits and four runs. Elih Villanueva (4-4) took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits over 2.1 innings.

Harrisburg struck back in the second inning, receiving a two-out, two-run homer by Khayyon Norfolk. In the third, Victor Robles and Corban Joseph hit back-to-back homers and Yadiel Herandez added a two-out RBI single.

Hernandez came through again with two outs off Josh Smith in the fifth, nailing a two-run single, and extending Harrisburg's lead to 7-3.

Portland scored twice in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 7-5. Jeremy Barfield hit a one-out homer, his 18th of the season, but his 12th this month. Barfield finished July with 12 homers and 33 RBI - both franchise records for a month.

Norfolk continued his hot two-out hitting, clearing the bases with a double against Jacob Dahlstrand, giving Harrisburg a 10-5 lead in the seventh. Portland added three runs in the eighth on a single by Mars. Bethea reached on a shortstop's error to plate home two.

The Sea Dogs are off on Monday and open up a six-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants affiliate) at Hadlock Field. LHP Henry Owens (2-3, 5.23) takes on RHP Tyler Herb (1-0, 4.18), first pitch is 7:00 PM.
