Dogs rally in the ninth but drop the finale

Reading, Pa. - Charlie Madden made quite the impression in his season debut with Portland. Madden clubbed two homers in Portland's 5-4 loss to the Reading Fightin Phils (22-16) on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Sea Dogs (12-27) dropped all four games in the series, and have lost six in a row.

Trailing 5-1 entering the ninth inning, Tate Matheny led off with a double against J.D. Hammer. Jerry Downs followed with an RBI single and Madden hit a two-shot down the left-field line. With two outs, Brett Netzer doubled, but Addison Russ (save) fanned C.J. Chatham (2-for-5) to end the game.

Right-hander Adonis Medina (1-2) earned his first win of the season with five scoreless frames. Denyi Reyes (0-6) was outstanding in the loss for Portland. Reyes allowed one run on a run-scoring groundout by Darrick Hall in the first. Hall gave Reading a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer in the sixth.

Madden put the 'Dogs on the board in the seventh, smacking a solo-shot in the seventh. For Madden, the multi-homer game was the first in his career, and he now has five homers in 66 minor league games.

Reading extended their lead to 5-1 in the seventh inning on a two-run homer by Luke Williams.

Matheny hits walk-off slam!!!! Dogs win 7-3 over Altoona

Portland, Maine - Tate Matheny cracked a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Portland Sea Dogs (16-32) a 7-3 win over the Altoona Curve (23-26) in the series finale on Monday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Portland took three of four over the Curve and picked up their first walk-off win of the season.

Brett Netzer started the rally with a one-out single off losing pitcher Matt Eckelman (1-2). With two outs, Josh Tobias and Cody Asche drew walks. Matheny homered on the first pitch, an opposite-field shot just about the right-field wall. Matheny has two grand slams out of his three Double-A homers.

Durbin Feltman (W, 2-1) allowed the tying run in the ninth inning, a homer by Jared Oliva, but earned the win.

Eckelman suffered his second of the series, yielding four runs in just 2/3 of an inning.

Portland starter Dedgar Jimenez (ND) was outstanding in his ninth start of the year. Jimenez tossed six scoreless on just six hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.

Portland took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning on RBI singles from Bobby Dalbec (2-for-5) and Josh Tobias.

Altoona chipped away with single runs in the seventh and eighth. Their bullpen retired ten straight until Netzer's ninth-inning single.

The Sea Dogs open up a seven-game trip in six days, beginning Tuesday night against the Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies affiliate) from Dunkin' Donuts Park. First pitch is 7:05 PM.
