Portland drops the opener of an 8-game homestand

Portland, Maine - The Trenton Thunder (62-31) overcame a 3-0 deficit with four runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Sea Dogs (43-48) 4-3 in the series opener on Monday night at Hadlock Field.

Trailing 3-0, Trenton began the sixth with three straight singles off of Teddy Stankiewicz to get on the board with their first run. After a walk to Zack Zehner, Stankiewicz was relieved by Williams Jerez. Jered struck out Jorge Saez with the bases loaded and nobody out, but then walked Dante Bichette, Jr. to make it 3-2. Devyn Bolasky followed and completed an 11-pitch at bat with a two-run single to give the Thunder the 4-3 lead.

The Sea Dogs had opportunities late in the game, but couldn't convert and stranded eight runners from the sixth through the ninth. Portland worked eight walks from the fifth inning on and also had a batter hit by a pitch.

Portland had two men on and nobody out in the sixth, but Jordan Procyshen popped out with runners at the corners and one out, then Josh Tobias was picked off at first by catcher Jorge Saez to end the inning.

In the seventh the Sea Dogs had runners on second and third and nobody out. Cody Carroll struck out Deiner Lopez for the first out, then after an intentional walk of Michael Chavis Jeremy Barfield grounded into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.

In the eighth, Portland had two on and one out against Carroll, but the righty was able to strike out Procyshen for the second out and got Nick Lovullo to ground out to end the inning.

In the ninth, after Carroll recorded two quick outs, Chavis doubled and Barfield walked. Dillon McNamara (S, 1) entered the game and walked Henry Urrutia to load the bases, but got Cole Sturgeon to ground out to end the ballgame.

Branden Pinder (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing one hit and three walks over 1.1 innings.

Chavis homered over the Maine Monster in the first inning off of Yefry Ramirez to give Portland an early 1-0 lead. The homer was Chavis' sixth with Portland and 23rd overall this season - the second most in minor league baseball behind Renato Nunez of Nashville (24).

The Sea Dogs doubled their lead with a two-out RBI single by Josh Tobias in the fourth inning. Chavis delivered another RBI with a two-out single in the fifth to make it 3-0 Portland.

Stankiewicz (3-4) allowed four earned runs on seven hits in 5+ innings, he walked two and fanned four.

Ramirez allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings in the start for Trenton. Ramirez walked one and struck out five.
