Binghamton gets by Portland

Binghamton, NY - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (30-19) scored seven unanswered runs, defeating the Portland Sea Dogs (23-27), 7-4, Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Rafael Devers went 3-for-4 with a 2-run homer in the loss.

RHP Mickey Jannis (4-1) worked six strong innings on four hits, two runs, no walks and seven strikeouts to earn the win for Binghamton. Portland took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by Devers (3-for-4, HR, 2 RBI).

Binghamton scored six runs off Teddy Stankiewicz (L, 2-3) in five innings, giving the righty his third loss of the year. Champ Stuart tied the game with a two-run double in the second inning. The Rumble Ponies took the lead for good in the third inning on a run-scoring double by Cody Decker, who scored on a wild pitch.

In the fifth, David Thompson (3-for-4) and Colton Plaia provided RBI singles, with Decker knocking in the seventh run on a sacrifice fly.

Portland made some noise in the ninth inning off the Ponies bullpen. Jeremy Barfield and Mike Olt delivered back-to-back RBI doubles, but Corey Burns retired the final two batters to earn his third save of the year.

LHP Jake Drehoff made his season debut for the Sea Dogs, allowing one run over three innings pitched.

The Sea Dogs and Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets affiliate) play a doubleheader on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium beginning at 5:35 PM. RHP Travis Lakins (0-2, 9.82) takes on RHP Seth Lugo (0-1, 4.50) in game one. In the nightcap, RHP Jacob Dahlstrand (3-1, 6.06) starts opposite LHP PJ Conlon (5-3, 3.47)

Portland, Maine - The Akron RubberDucks (26-28) swept a doubleheader over the Sea Dogs (24-30) on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field, winning game one 21-4 and game two 7-6 in eight innings.

Game 1 recap
In game one, the Sea Dogs set a new franchise record for runs allowed in a single game with 21. The previous high of 20 had occurred multiple times, most recently vs. Connecticut on April 26, 2009.

The 17-run margin of defeat also tied a franchise record, which had previously been set on August 19, 2009 vs. Reading.

All nine hitters in the RubberDucks' lineup had at least a hit in game one, while eight of nine finished with multi-hit games.

Akron struck for four runs in the second inning off of Elih Villanueva (L, 0-1), then added four more off Villanueva in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 8-0.

Villanueva lasted 3.1 innings in his Red Sox organizational debut and allowed ten hits while walking one and striking out three. Seven of the runs allowed by Villanueva were earned.

Matt Esparza (2-0) was excellent in his second career Double-A start. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out five.

Akron blew the game open in the fifth, scoring eight runs on seven hits off of Williams Jerez. The RubberDucks sent 12 men to the plate in the inning and led 16-1 after five.

Akron had their third four-run inning of the game in the seventh.

Francisco Mejia homered twice and drove in six runs. Luigi Rodriguez had four hits - including a homer and two doubles. Yu Chang also added a three-run homer over the Maine Monster.

Nick Longhi finished with two doubles and an RBI for Portland. Jeremy Barfield went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, and Josh Tobias had two RBIs as well.


Game 2 recap

Akron picked up where they left off in the first inning of game two, scoring five runs off of Jake Drehoff (ND) in the first inning. Joe Sever put Akron on the board with a two-run single, then Eric Haase hit a three-run homer to make it 5-0.

Trailing 6-1 in the third, the Sea Dogs began their comeback. With two on and two out, Mike Olt delivered a two-run double off of David Speer (ND) to cut the deficit to 6-3. Portland scored two more times in the fourth off of Perci Garner to make it a one-run game, then Olt homered off of Cameron Hill in the fifth to tie it 6-6.

Speer (ND) allowed three runs on five hits in 2.2 innings in a spot start for Akron.

Luigi Rodriguez hit a solo homer into the US Cellular Pavilion off of Josh Smith in the 8th inning to give Akron the 7-6 victory.

Portland, Maine - Nick Longhi hit a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth and the Sea Dogs (26-30) won their series opener against the Erie SeaWolves (29-29) 7-5 in front of a sellout crowd Fridaynight at Hadlock Field.

With the bases empty and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Jeremy Barfield singled to left off of Waldis Joaquin (2-3). Longhi was the next batter and drilled a 3-2 pitch to left center field to give Portland the victory.

Josh Smith (3-1) earned the win with three innings of relief. Teddy Stankiewicz (ND) started for the Sea Dogs and threw his team-leading seventh quality start and struck out a season-high eight. Smith matched a career-high with five strikeouts, while the pair combined to set a season-high 13 strikeouts by Portland pitchers.

Erie took an lead with three runs on three hits in the third inning, but Portland answered in the bottom of the fourth when Josh Tobias hit a three-run homer with two outs off of AJ Ladwig (ND) to tie the game 3-3. The homer was Tobias' first as a Sea Dog.

Erie scored an unearned run on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Josh Smith in the seventh to take a 4-3 lead, but Portland answered on a two-run double by Rafael Devers in the bottom of the frame, aided by an error by left fielder Christin Stewart.

Erie tied things up at 5 on a solo homer by Gabriel Quintana before Longhi sent the fans home happy in the ninth.

Longhi's walk-off homer was the first since Nate Freiman did it on August 24, 2016 against New Hampshire.

The series continues tomorrow evening, first pitch at Hadlock Field is scheduled for 6:00 PM. LHP Trey Ball (1-5, 5.77) starts for Portland vs. RHP Myles Jaye (1-4, 3.62) of Erie. Tickets available at seadogs.com or 207-879-9500.

Sea Dogs squeak past Erie

Portland, Maine - Tzu-Wei Lin delivered an RBI single in the seventh inning to score Jordan Procyshen and the Sea Dogs (27-30) defeated the Erie SeaWolves (29-30) 4-3 on Saturday night at Hadlock Field. Portland has won three straight games.

Procyshen led off the seventh with a leadoff walk issued by Myles Jaye (1-5). Danny Mars failed to drop a sac bunt and struck out, but during his at bat Procyshen advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jairo Labourt entered the game for Erie, and Lin greeted him with the game-winning hit.

Williams Jerez closed out the game to earn his second save of the season, pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth.

Each team plated two runs in the first inning. Gabriel Quintana clubbed a two-run homer off of Trey Ball (ND) for his 14th home run of the season to make it 2-0 Erie. Then in the bottom of the first, Cole Sturgeon delivered a two-out, two-run single off of Jaye to tie the game 2-2.

The Sea Dogs took their first lead of the game on an RBI groundout from Josh Tobias to score Danny Mars in the fifth inning.

Erie responded in the top of the seventh on a sac fly by Dominic Ficociello off of Jake Cosart (2-2). Cosart earned the victory, allowing one run in 1.2 innings of relief.

Ball allowed two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings, walking four and striking out four. Jaye went 6.1 and allowed four runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

Portland, Maine - Jake DePew hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning off of Mike Zagurski and the Sea Dogs (28-30) swept the Erie SeaWolves (29-31) with a 10-7 win on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field.

The win was the fourth straight for Portland, while the sweep was the Sea Dogs' first of the SeaWolves at home since 2012.

Ruben Alaniz (2-2) walked Mike Olt to lead off the eighth, then was relieved by Zagurski. Cole Sturgeon struck out swinging, then DePew went yard. It was DePew's second home run of the season. Later in the inning with two outs, Danny Mars and Tzu-Wei Lin hit back-to-back singles, then Nick Longhi hit a two-run double off of Adam Ravenelle to extend the Portland lead to 10-7. The Sea Dogs sent nine men to the plate in the eighth and scored four runs on four hits.

Erie had taken a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth with a sac fly by AJ Simcox off of Luis Ysla (1-3). Ysla allowed one run in two innings of relief, while Jake Drehoff allowed four in three innings. Spot-starter Taylor Grover (ND) went three innings to begin the game and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out five. Bobby Poyner earned his first Double-A save with a scoreless ninth.

Mars hit four hits for the second time this season. Longhi finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

For the first time in the series, the Sea Dogs scored first. Portland loaded the bases with nobody out in the second off of Tyler Alexander (ND). Cole Sturgeon grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score a run, then DePew hit and RBI single to put Portland ahead 2-0.

Erie answered with two runs in the next half-inning. Harold Castro tripled with one out, then scored on a sac fly by Logan Watkins. Dominic Ficociello followed up with a single and Christin Stewart singled to score Ficociello and tie the game.

The SeaWolves took their first lead in the fourth with three runs off of Grover. With one out in the inning, Mike Gerber doubled, then Zach Cox singled him in to give Erie a 3-2 lead. Grayson Geriner followed up with a two-run homer to make it 5-2.

Portland got a run back on a solo homer by Mike Olt in the fourth, then Erie added a run in the fifth on an RBI double by Gabriel Quintana to make it 6-3.

The Sea Dogs rallied back to tie the game with a three-run fifth off of Alexander. A leadoff walk to Deiner Lopez started the inning, followed by a Danny Mars single. Lopez scored from second on a fielder's choice and error by second baseman Harold Castro to allow Mars to reach second base. Mars scored on a double by Longhi to cut the deficit to one, then Lin scored on a wild pitch by Alaniz to tie the game 6-6.

The Sea Dogs head west to begin a nine-game road trip on Tuesday night in Altoona against the Curve. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Pregame coverage begins live on the US Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network at 6:45 PM.

Altoona with a four-run eight, wins 6-0 over Portland

Altoona, PA - The Altoona Curve (34-28) scored four runs in the eighth inning, and took the series opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (28-31), 6-0, Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The loss snapped Portland's four-game winning streak.

Altoona's J.T. Brubaker (W, 4-2) tossed a season-high seven innings on just three hits, no walks and fanned a season-high 10 batters.

Portland's Travis Lakins suffered a tough loss, allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings pitched. Lakins dropped to 0-4, earning his first quality start in Double-A.

The Curve struck in the fifth inning on a run-scoring single by Jerrick Suiter. The next inning, Altoona made it 2-0 on back-to-back two-out hits. Connor Joe tripled and scored on a single by Edwin Espinal.

In the eighth, Elvis Escobar greeted Jake Cosart by smoking the first pitch of the inning over the right-field wall. Altoona added three runs off Cosart in the inning.

Portland had just three hits, all singles (Barfield, Lin and Olt), and just one runner reached third base.
The Sea Dogs and Altoona Curve continue their three-game series on Wednesday night. RHP Eli Villanueva makes his second start of the season for Portland. Altoona counters with RHY Yeudy Garcia (2-4, 5.80). First pitch from Peoples Natural Gas begins at 7:00 PM.

Six in the second for the 'Dogs, win 7-4 at Altoona

Altoona, PA - The Portland Sea Dogs (29-31) scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back, defeating the Altoona Curve (34-29), 7-4, Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Portland's pitched retired 15 straight to end the game.

RHP Elih Villanueva (1-1) earned his first win in the Red Sox system, working six innings on eight hits and four runs. Altoona's RHP Yeudy Garcia (2-5) took the loss, allowing five runs over 1.1 innings, and left the game with an injury.

Altoona scored twice in the first inning, but the 'Dogs went to work, scoring six times on six hits in the second. Denier Lopez (2-for-4) knocked in Portland's first run with a single. Tzu-Wei-Lin cleared the bases with a three-run double down the right-field line. Nick Longhi added a run-scoring fielder's choice and Henry Urrutia added an RBI single. Urrutia went 2-for-5 in his debut in the Red Sox system.

LHP Williams Jerez pitched two perfect frames for his second hold of the year. LHP Bobby Poyner retired all three batters in the ninth for his second Double-A save.

3B Rafael Devers blasted a solo-homer in the fourth inning to give Portland a 7-2 lead. The homer was the 11th for Devers, matching his total from last season.

Altoona added two runs in the fifth inning on RBIs from Joe and Espinal.

Rafael Devers 2-for-4 with his 12th homer, a new career-high

Altoona, PA - The Altoona Curve (35-29) scored four times in the fourth inning and Alex McRae (5-2) hurled seven innings, defeating the Portland Sea Dogs (29-32), 7-1 on Thursday afternoon at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

McRae tossed seven innings on four hits, one run and fanned five, earning his first career win against Portland. LHP Trey Ball (1-6) suffered the loss, yielding eight hits and five runs over four innings pitched.

The Curve snapped a 1-1 tie with a four-run second against Ball. Zane Chavez snapped a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring single. Kevin Newman and Edwin Espinal added RBI hits in the frame. Altoona scored two in the eighth on a two-run homer by Jerrick Suiter.

Altoona took a 1-0 lead in the second inning against Ball. Kevin Newman delivered an RBI infield-single, but Ball got out of the inning with a double play.

Rafael Devers tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo-homer to right field. Devers set a new career-high with his 12th homer, which leads the team.

LHP Jake Drehoff worked three scoreless in relief of Ball, allowing one hit and fanning two.

The Sea Dogs open up a three-game series on Friday night against the Akron RubberDucks (Indians affiliate) at Canal Park. RHP Jacob Dahlstrand (5-1, 5.79) makes his 13th appearance for the 'Dogs in the series opener. LHP Matt Whitehouse (2-3, 3.40) gets the starting nod for Akron. First pitch from Ohio is 7:00 PM.

Akron, Ohio - The Akron RubberDucks (32-31) scored six unanswered runs and beat the Portland Sea Dogs (29-34), 8-3, Saturday night at Canal Park in front of a sellout crowd of 8,284 fans. The 'Dogs have dropped the first 2 games of the series and are 1-4 during their 9-game roadtrip.

Portland trailed 2-0 heading to the third inning but took a 3-2 lead against Tanner Tully (win). Denier Lopez reached on two errors and ended up at third base. Danny Mars grounded an RBI single to right field and Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer. Devers has three homers in his last four games and 13 on the season.

Tully, who was called up from Low-A Lake County, hurled six innings on six hits, three runs (all unearned) on two walks and one strikeout.

Kevin McAvoy (1-5) suffered the loss, allowing eight hits and six runs (five earned) over 4+ innings pitched.

Akron rallied back after Portland's top of the fifth, scoring four runs in their half of the fifth. Francisco Mejia led off the rally with a walk and Bobby Bradley hit a two-run homer. Connor Marabell provided a run-scoring fielder's choice. In the eighth, Luigi Rodriguez hit a two-run homer off Jake Cosart.

Mars finished 2-for-5 and Cole Sturgeon had two hits for Portland. Williams Jerez worked three scoreless innings on three hits and two strikeouts.
