Red Sox trade rumors: Might Dombrowski pursue Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander?

Boston Globe national baseball reporter Nick Cafardo listed in his Sunday column this week 15 players with big, complicated deals who are candidates to be traded this offseason.

Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander, Giancarlo Stanton and Zack Grienke were four of the 15 candidates who Cafardo mentioned. And he had Boston, among other organizations, as a potential destination for each of the four.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski traded for Cabrera and drafted Verlander when serving as the GM of the Detroit Tigers. He also signed Cabrera as an international free agent when serving as the Marlins GM in 1999.

Five more Red Sox who no longer have minor league options starting in 2017

Five Red Sox players — Christian Vazquez, Heath Hembree, Bryce Brentz, Bryan Holaday and Fernando Abad — all will be out of minor league options starting in 2017.

That means the Red Sox no longer can freely option any of these five players back and forth from Triple-A Pawtucket to Boston without designating them for assignment.

Christian Vazquez: Expect for Vazquez to make the major league roster over Blake Swihart simply because Vazquez no longer has options and Swihart does.

The Red Sox’ strange platoon situation

The Red Sox have a lot of right-handed hitters. Look at the expected starting lineup, and you’ve got Dustin Pedroia, Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Hanley Ramirez. Sandy Leon masquerades as a switch-hitter, but his splits both in 2016 and before would suggest that he, too, is a righty—just one who happens to take some swings from the left side on occasion. On the other side of things, we have only Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr., and the third baseman, whoever that happens to be (Shaw bats lefty, and Sandoval is the left-handed equivalent of Leon). Even Boston’s best bench bat is the lefty-crushing Chris Young.

It’s a situation which has led some to say the Sox should prioritize a left-handed bat in the offseason. Or, if not prioritize, at least weight slightly in favor of lefties in looking to fill the vacant DH spot.

Weirdly enough, though, when you actually try to build the lineups, it’s not the lineup against right-handed pitchers that’s hard to fill, but the one against lefties.

'Boo' Ferriss dies at 94

JACKSON, Miss. -- David "Boo" Ferriss, a Boston Red Sox pitcher who helped lead the team to the 1946 World Series, has died. He was 94.

Rick Cleveland, a close friend of the former player, said Ferriss died Thursday at his home in Cleveland, Mississippi, surrounded by family. Cleveland said Ferriss had been in declining health for several weeks.

Ferriss pitched six years for the Red Sox from 1945 to 1950. He had his best season in 1946, when he finished with a 25-6 record and 3.25 ERA and was named an American League All-Star. The Shaw, Mississippi, native's career was shortened by a shoulder injury in 1947, but he finished with a 65-30 career record.

Giants Have Considered Pursuing Pablo Sandoval Trade

The Giants have had internal discussions about trying to strike a deal for Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval, according to Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald. It is not known whether the two organizations have talked about the former San Francisco star.

Sandoval, 30, is two years into what has been a disastrous free agent contract with the Red Sox. Entering the 2014-15 offseason, he was widely regarded as a high-quality option at the hot corner, with youth on his side and a resume full of strong contributions with the bat and the glove. The Giants pursued a reunion, but Sandoval ultimately took five years and $95MM to head east.

The productivity came to an end as soon as he reached Boston, however. Sandoval posted a decidedly mediocre .245/.292/.366 batting line in his first season with his new organization, and drew abysmal reviews for his fielding at the hot corner. He lost his starting job in camp heading into 2016, and ultimately underwent season-ending shoulder surgery.

Evans denies talk of Pablo Sandoval-Giants potential reunion

The Boston Herald reported Friday that the San Francisco Giants "at least internally" have discussed trading for Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

Sandoval played for the Giants from 2008-14, then signed a five-year, $95-million contract with Boston in free agency before the 2015 season

But San Francisco GM Bobby Evans denied the Herald's report.

Red Sox: Did Cespedes set the market for Encarnacion?

Yoenis Cespedes is returning to the New York Mets. The free agent slugger reportedly re-signed with New York for four years, $110 million -- or an average annual salary of $27.5 million.

Did Cespedes just set up the market for free agent slugger Edwin Encarnacion to sign during the winter meetings next week in Washington D.C.?

As of now, Jason Heyward ($28.166 million) and Miguel Cabrera ($28 million) are the only two position players set to earn more than Cespedes in 2017 if Cespedes receives the average annual value of his contract next season.
