Kennedy says Eckersley was owed an apology

Red Sox team president Sam Kennedy said NESN analyst and Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley was owed an apology after he was verbally blasted by pitcher David Price on a charter flight last month.

“Dennis Eckersley was owed an apology after what happened, clearly,’’ Kennedy told WEEI. “Let me be clear, he received one less than 12 hours after the incident happened.’’

Kennedy did not say if Price or Red Sox manager John Farrell apologized.

“He received one from me. I woke him up in his hotel room in Toronto,’’ said Kennedy. “John Farrell and Dave Dombrowski were aware of that, we had conversations about that.’’

Red Sox Trade Rumors: Red Sox might hold off on bullpen moves after missing Neshek

The Boston Red Sox could still make a move to upgrade their bullpen as the MLB trade deadline approaches, but according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, the team might hold off with Pat Neshek off the market.

Neshek, who was pitching for a Philadelphia Phillies team that had the worst record in the league, was dealt on Wednesday in exchange for three minor leaguers to the Colorado Rockies, who are currently in line for a wildcard berth in the National League playoffs.

Per ESPN, the Red Sox had their eye on Neshek specifically, even though other reliever options exist. Boston "liked the different look Neshek would have provided with his funky delivery," and the way he would shake up their right-hander options out of the bullpen.

Fister cools Tribe bats for first Red Sox win

BOSTON -- If Doug Fister's stat line coming into Monday night's start didn't provide confidence that he could be a solid fill-in for David Price in the Red Sox's rotation, the veteran sinkerballer made his case with a strong performance against one of the hottest teams in the game.

Rafael Devers helped Fister's cause by going 4-for-4 in his sixth career game as the Red Sox rolled to a 6-2 victory over the Indians in the opener of a three-game series at Fenway Park.

"He pitched a gem here tonight," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Fister. "Mentioned the other day about the work that he's been doing when he went to the bullpen, some adjustments to his stride direction that's allowed him to refine his release point. Tonight, big effect by a big, slow curveball in addition to a lot of sink to his fastball."

Mets trade reliever Addison Reed to Red Sox

DENVER — When Sandy Alderson acquired Addison Reed in August 2015, he solidified a staff that needed a back-of-the-bullpen arm to get to the playoffs. The Mets GM saw immediate results in his corps of relievers and went on a run to the World Series.

Monday, Alderson flipped Reed with an eye toward rebuilding the bullpen with a little more of a long-term approach.

The Mets sent Reed, who will hit free agency this winter, to the Red Sox for three 22-year-old righthanded relieving prospects — Jamie Callahan, Gerson Bautista and Stephen Nogosek.
