Winners, losers from Alex Rodriguez's Yankees retirement

NEW YORK - When Alex Rodriguez landed with the Yankees in the winter of 2004, it felt like a marriage of opportunity rather than love.

Buckley: Alex Rodriguez back at Fenway for final round of boos

When you live in Boston, you go up to New Hampshire for the booze.

When you live in New York, you go up to Boston for the boos.

And nobody understands this better than Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees slugger has been folded, spindled and mutilated by Red Sox fans over the years — the booing delivered with more coarseness and vulgarity than anything the likes of Reggie Jackson, Billy Martin and Bill Parcells (as coach of the Jets, not the Giants) ever received.

Fans’ love-hate relationship with A-Rod nears finale
Yankees infielder a polarizing figure in New York and beyond.

NEW YORK (AP) — Alex Rodriguez’s tempestuous relationship with New York Yankees fans comes to an end Friday when he plays his last game in pinstripes and he is making his exit without much of the adulation lavished on some hometown stars.

Despite 351 home runs for the Bombers, and just four short of 700 for a career, his big-money contracts and off-field antics made him a less-than-beloved character for some, even before his suspension for drug use.

Yankees' Joe Girardi breaks down in tears after Alex Rodriguez's last game

NEW YORK — Slugger Alex Rodriguez said goodbye to baseball as a player (for now) Friday evening in the Bronx (Yankees won, 6-3) and afterwards his manager, Joe Girardi, let his emotions spill out.

"I have a huge heart, and if this is the last time he plays, I wanted it to be something never forgotten," a weeping Girardi told reporters, unable to speak at times.

This week has been messy for Girardi and A-Rod. Ever since we learned last Sunday that Friday would be Rodriguez's last game, Girardi and he have been at odds over playing time.
