Red Sox's Mookie Betts putting on impressive spring show

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- This Mookie Betts business is getting a little out of hand. Hanley Ramirez, help us out here. Can you recall a kid having a spring like the one Betts is having?

“Reminds me of myself in '06, when I was trying to make the team [Florida Marlins],’’ said Ramirez after Betts raised his spring average to .471 with a double and inside-the-park home run in Sunday’s 7-6 Red Sox win over the Philadelphia Phillies in JetBlue Park.

Ramirez wasn’t bragging. He was the same age as Betts when he lit up Marlins camp that spring (.311/.354/.568/.922 slash line, with 2 doubles, 4 triples and 3 home runs), a preview of the Rookie of the Year performance he put on for Florida in the regular season.

Hanley Ramirez hits first HR of spring

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Hanley Ramirez, novice Boston Red Sox outfielder, hit his first home run of spring Sunday. He all but yawned afterward.

“Like I told Panda [Pablo Sandoval], we’re not trying to make the team, we’re just trying to get ready," said Ramirez, who drove in five runs with his three-run home run and two-run single in Boston’s 7-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies Sunday in JetBlue Park.

Ramirez, who has been hitting the ball with authority the last week, rattling line drives regularly to left field, is now batting .300 this spring. Not that he’s paying close attention.

Porcello turns in solid outing for Red Sox

FORT MYERS, Florida — Boston Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello turned in a solid outing against the St. Louis Cardinals Monday at JetBlue Park before the spring training game was canceled due to unplayable field conditions following a 55-minute rain delay. Porcello, who Boston acquired in the off-season when it …

Takeaways: Rick Porcello talks hot and cold

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Takeaways from the Fort, where Monday's practice exercise between the Red Sox and Cardinals was halted by rain in the fifth, with the Cardinals leading, 2-0:

Having grown up in New Jersey and played at Seton Hall Prep, Rick Porcello has plenty of experience pitching in cold weather.

“I pitched in a couple of games where it was snowing,’’ Porcello said. “There was a preseason game in high school, it might have been 18 or 20 degrees. It was supposed to be in the 30s with sunshine, but a cloud cover came in and it never got warm. It was absolutely freezing. I threw two or three innings, and I remember hitting one off the end of the bat, and my hands were ringing the rest of the game.

Koji Uehara may miss Opening Day

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox are growing less optimistic by the day that closer Koji Uehara will recover from a spring training hamstring injury in time to be on the Opening Day roster.

Manager John Farrell told reporters before Tuesday's game with the Miami Marlins that the Red Sox hope Uehara will throw off flat ground and then complete a bullpen session by the weekend.

Farrell acknowledged that time is growing shorter for Uehara to be ready to pitch by the regular-season opener in Philadelphia on April 6.

Craig keeps plugging away amid uncertainty

JUPITER, Fla. -- Boston Red Sox outfielder Allen Craig is in no position to scoff at long bus trips. Less than three weeks into the Grapefruit League season, he has already made two 5-½ hour back-and-forth jaunts from Fort Myers to Jupiter and another lengthy trek up Florida's Gulf Coast to Dunedin.

Such is life for a veteran player coming off an injury and an uncharacteristically bad season, on a roster that's jam-packed with competition at his position. Amid all the uncertainty, every chance to make a positive impression is valuable.

Amazing what you can learn here

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Good morning from the Fort, where Wednesday’s day off for the Sons of John Farrell afforded an opportunity to spend some time with the 2015 Red Sox meda guide, which features a great cover shot of David Ortiz flanked by Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez, all three looking relaxed and as happy as can be.

Hard to believe, but of the three of them, Ortiz will be the one drawing the smallest salary this season -- Ramirez will be paid $19 million, Sandoval $17 million and Ortiz $16 million, the same salary the Sox are paying Mike Napoli. And the Sox were obliged to pay all of Ramirez’s $3 million signing bonus by March 15.

The club holds $10 million options on Ortiz’s contract for 2016 and 2017, and while the value of those options increases depending on number of plate appearances, the option years don’t automatically vest. Ortiz must pass a team physical first. If he does, the contract becomes guaranteed at $11 million for 425 plate appearances, $12 million for 465 PAs, $13 million for 500 PAs $14 million for 525 PAs, $15 million for 575 PAs and $16 million for 600 PAs...

David Ortiz should realize clean tests can't be considered foolproof evidence

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- You can admire David Ortiz’s passion, respect his anger, understand his frustration that his remarkable accomplishments in 13 seasons with the Boston Red Sox -- including three World Series titles -- are filtered through the prism of baseball’s steroid era, and his name being linked to a positive PED test in 2003 that was supposed to be anonymous.

His fellow players surely empathize with his despair that his work ethic, intelligence and mental preparation, not to mention the difficult circumstances of his upbringing that he was able to overcome, are given short shrift in any discussion of what he has done in the game.

Clay Buchholz, an Opening Day primer

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell prefers to take a head count of healthy bodies before he announces his choice of starting pitcher for Opening Day. That’s why there has been no official acknowledgment that Clay Buchholz will draw that assignment April 6 in Philadelphia, even though Farrell set up his rotation at the start of spring training with Buchholz in mind and has not deviated from that schedule.

Buchholz was still standing at the end of his latest spring exercise, Friday’s 4-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves in Kissimmee that came to a premature end in the seventh inning because of heavy rain. So, assuming Buchholz remains in an upright position after his final spring tune-up next Wednesday, the manager might decide it’s safe to confirm his choice of the 30-year-old right-hander to inaugurate the 2015 season.

Operating under that assumption, then, we take the liberty of offering you a few nuggets related to the first Opening Day assignment of Buchholz’s career.

Ryan Hanigan ready to be No. 1 catcher for Red Sox

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Ryan Hanigan, a native of Andover, Massachusetts, was traded twice on one day last December to wind up with his hometown team. Now, a week before the Boston Red Sox break camp, the 34-year-old catcher who has never caught more than 100 games in a season in an eight-year big-league career is about to become the team’s No. 1 catcher because of an elbow injury to the highly regarded Christian Vazquez.

The Red Sox have not announced the extent of Vazquez’s injury, other than to say he would be seeking a second opinion after results of an MRI administered Friday showed some degree of structural damage. But it was clear from Hanigan’s comments following Boston’s 9-6 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday that the injury is more than a short-term concern and points to possible surgery.
