Sea Dogs bring personality to 2014 season
Portland opens Thursday night at Reading.
By Kevin Thomas

The Boston Red Sox won a baseball championship in 2013, claiming that a combination of camaraderie and talent pushed the team to the top. They were not the only ones. Down a few rungs on the baseball ladder, the Salem Red Sox overcame some of their top players being promoted to Portland and still came through to win the Carolina League championship...

Owens pitches no-hitter in Sea Dogs’ opener
Henry Owens strikes out nine in a six-inning game.
By Mike Drago

READING, Pa. — A couple of days before their opener Thursday night, Portland Sea Dogs Manager Billy McMillon pulled out the lineup card from last July 17, when he and Henry Owens wore Salem Red Sox uniforms. He showed it to Owens and the young left-hander got the message. Just nine months after he pitched the first six innings of a combined no-hitter, Owens repeated his feat, throwing six no-hit innings in a 5-0 victory against the Reading Fightin Phils at FirstEnergy Stadium..

Sea Dogs reach 2-0
Mookie Betts continues his strong start in a 4-1 win over Reading.
By Mike Drago

READING, Pa. — Mookie Betts got a chance to talk hitting with Dustin Pedroia and some of the other Red Sox hitters at big league camp during spring training. He obviously took good notes. He’s making the most of his skull sessions and has seven hits in the Portland Sea Dogs’ first two games, including three more in a 4-1 win over the Reading Fightin Phils on Friday night...

Sea Dogs bats go quiet in 3-2 loss at Reading
Nate Reed takes the loss in relief as Portland hitters manage just one hit over the last six innings.
By Mike Drago

READING, Pa. — Nate Reed didn’t have a good scouting report on Reading Fightin Phils right fielder Kelly Dugan. Apparently, neither does most of baseball since Dugan gave up switch-hitting two years ago. Dugan, who hits strictly from the left side now, doesn’t care who’s on the mound these days...

Fightin Phils edge Sea Dogs
Portland Manager Billy McMillon is still getting feel of the team.
By Mike Drago

READING, Pa. — Before Thursday’s season opener, first-year Portland Manager Billy McMillon confessed he didn’t have a strong feel for what kind of Sea Dogs team he had brought north from Florida. Four games in, and after a 4-3 Eastern League loss Sunday that split the season-opening series versus the Reading Fightin Phils, the former Sea Dogs outfielder still wasn’t sure...

Sea Dogs fall behind early in 10-1 loss to Trenton
Portland loses its third straight after opening the season with two wins.
By Mike Ashmore

TRENTON, N.J. — On Monday, rain washed away the first game of the Sea Dogs’ series against the Trenton Thunder. One day later, the forecast called for starting pitcher Mike McCarthy to try to weather some early storms. He couldn’t.,,

Sea Dogs hope new features, better schedule will attract bigger crowds
After a week on the road, Portland opens its home schedule tonight at Hadlock Field.
By Kevin Thomas

They got a break by starting the 2014 season in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, giving Hadlock Field a chance to thaw and dry out. After a week on the road, the Portland Sea Dogs will put on the home whites Thursday, starting a seven-game homestand. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 5:50 p.m., with the game starting at 6:20 p.m...

Owens dominates again for Sea Dogs
Henry Owens pitches 6-2/3 shutout innings following a no-hitter.
By Mike Ashmore

TRENTON, N.J. — Back in August of last year, Henry Owens’ first outing in Trenton lasted just three innings. He threw 77 pitches, issued seven walks and told reporters after the game that he “stunk.” That was then, this is now and Owens, the top pitching prospect in the Red Sox organization, remains all but unhittable...

Portland Sea Dogs roster loaded with top Red Sox prospects
By Larry Mahoney

In 2005, the opening-day roster for the Portland Sea Dogs of the AA Eastern League included second baseman Dustin Pedroia, shortstop Hanley Ramirez and pitchers Jon Lester and Jonathan Papelbon. All have gone on to become stars in the major leagues. Pedroia, Lester and Papelbon helped the Red Sox win...
