Brandon Workman still hopes to be starter

MASHANTUCKET, Conn. -- When the Boston Red Sox acquired a trio of pitchers to fill out their rotation this offseason, it was a tough pill for Brandon Workman to swallow.

The right-hander has always viewed himself as a starter. But when the opportunity finally came last season, Workman failed to take advantage of it.

Alexi Ogando signs with Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have signed free-agent right-hander Alexi Ogando to a one-year, major league contract.

The deal is worth $1.5 million guaranteed, with incentives, according to reports. The incentives could push the deal to $3 million, according to a USA Today report.

Non-tendered by the Texas Rangers in December, Ogando, 31, was viewed as one of the market's top low-risk, high-reward arms. An All-Star as a starter in 2011, a myriad injuries in recent seasons derailed the once-promising right-hander. Ogando went 2-3 with a 6.84 ERA last season in 25 innings pitched out of the bullpen.

Minor leaguer signed by Sox suspended for PED use

Ricardo Cubillan, a 17-year-old Venezuelan shortstop who was signed by the Red Sox in November and had yet to appear in a game in the team’s minor-league system, has been suspended for 76 games without pay after violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment program.

Lefty Drake Britton claimed by Cubs

The Boston Red Sox announced Wednesday that left-handed pitcher Drake Britton was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs.

Britton, 25, was a former top pitching prospect for the Red Sox as a starter before being converted to a reliever, where he was expected to be a better fit at the major league level. In stints with the team each of the last two seasons, Britton enjoyed success out of the bullpen, posting a 2.93 ERA in 27.2 innings combined.

Red Sox, Wade Miley sign extension

The Boston Red Sox signed left-handed pitcher Wade Miley to a three-year extension on Thursday, avoiding arbitration. The deal includes a fourth-year club option.

The value of the contract is $19.25 million, and it would increase to $30.75 million if the Red Sox exercise their fourth-year option, according to a baseball source. The deal breaks down as follows: $500,000 signing bonus, $3.5 million in 2015, $6 million in 2016, $8.75 million in 2017 and a $12 million club option for 2018 with a $500,000 buyout.

Jarrod Parker loses arbitration case

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Oakland Athletics pitcher Jarrod Parker has lost his salary arbitration case after missing the entire 2014 season. Parker was given an $850,000 salary on Saturday by Elizabeth Neumeier, Robert Herzog and Mark Irvings instead of his request for $1.7 million. The sides argued their positions a day earlier. A 26-year-old right-hander, Parker was sidelined after getting hurt during spring training and having elbow ligament-replacement surgery for the second time...

Ranking Red Sox position players

BOSTON -- How can a player who is not even assured of a starting position this season for the Boston Red Sox rank as potentially their most valuable player entering spring training? That's the question revolving around Mookie Betts, the 22-year-old outfielder who is projected by Baseball Prospectus to have the highest WAR (wins above replacement player) of any Red Sox position player in 2015.

WAR, as calculated by Baseball Prospectus, is an attempt to determine a player's total value, factoring in such components as playing time, position, batting, baserunning and defense for position players, and role, innings pitched and quality of performance for pitchers.

Red Sox starters get mixed reviews

BOSTON -- It's hard to imagine John W. Henry making multiple house calls in the future to keep any of the current members of the Red Sox starting rotation, the way he did last fall with Jon Lester. Skeptics abound who maintain that general manager Ben Cherington has not done enough to compensate for the loss of Lester -- that without an established ace, the Sox cannot expect to be a legitimate contender.

The statistical evaluators at Baseball Prospectus send a mixed message regarding the rotation. The good news for Boston fans is that the BP folks project the Sox will win the division, even without an ace, and they project all five starters to post a winning record in 2015.
