Bearded Red Sox rejoice over turnaround season
By Larry Fine,

They went from 93 losses last year to 97 wins this season with a new manager and new players who helped transform a dysfunctional clubhouse with some frat-house bonding and a Boston Red Sox battle cry of “Fear the Beard.” The hirsute band of brothers have flipped the standings upside ..

Farrell not ready to disclose Red Sox playoff rotation
Jon Lester is expected to get the assignment, but Manager John Farrell isn't ready to commit.

BOSTON — Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell isn’t ready to announce his rotation for the AL division series.

It would be a surprise, though, if Jon Lester didn’t throw the first pitch in Friday’s opener at Fenway Park.

“We all gain confidence from every starting pitcher that goes out and keeps a game under control,” Farrell said Tuesday. “He’s done it very ...

AL Wild-Card Game: Rays might be the wildest road warriors
But the Indians have overcome obstacles as well, and now the two teams vie to play the Sox.
By Tom Withers

CLEVELAND - Sporting sunglasses, a teal shirt and a backpack hanging from his shoulder, Tampa Bay Manager Joe Maddon looked like a tourist as he arrived late for his news conference.

Maddon had an excuse. The Rays have been on the road...

Steve Solloway: No one saw '13 Red Sox coming

Few expected Boston to reach the playoffs, let alone tie the St. Louis Cardinals for the most wins – 97 – in major league baseball.

Got tickets to Friday’s baseball game at Fenway Park? Lucky you.

The first game of the American League Division Series, the first step to the 2013 World Series, is at hand. You dare to think the Boston Red Sox can follow their championships of 2004 and 2007...

As expected, Lester receives Game 1 call
Jon Lester is announced as the Game 1 starter on the day the Red Sox hold a simulated game

BOSTON - Boston Red Sox Manager John Farrell waited until all his players safely made it out of a simulated game Wednesday before confirming what he'd only hinted at before: Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the AL division series.

"He's been outstanding in the second half," Farrell said. "The last couple of starts he's put together for us have been very strong."

American League Division Series: A pesky opponent lies in wait
Tampa Bay has been a part of recent Red Sox frustrations, and has the chance to add another.
By Kevin Thomas

BOSTON - Talk all you want about the New York Yankees and Babe Ruth, Bucky Dent and Aaron Boone.

The Tampa Bay Rays are the team that has pestered Boston the most in recent years.

Kevin Thomas: Sox need their lefty to be right
BOSTON - Not that anything has come easy to Jon Lester, but 2007 finished as smoothly as he could have hoped.

Two years removed from his Portland Sea Dogs days -- and a year after his cancer scare -- Lester made his first-ever postseason start in 2007.

Just happened to be Game 4 of the World Series against Colorado...
