On Baseball: A new Manny joins the reunion
Manny Ramirez apologizes as the 2004 title team comes together again.
By Kevin Thomas

BOSTON — They arrived, talking old times, and also seeing some of themselves in a recent Red Sox team. There was Damon, Youk, Tek, Timlin and more. And the biggest surprise of all: Manny being Prodigal Manny. The 2004 world champion Red Sox returned Wednesday night to Fenway Park to celebrate the magic they sprinkled on this ballpark, this city and all of New England....

On Baseball: Injured Youkilis not quite ready to say it’s over
Kevin Youkilis, the former Red Sox star, was released from his contract in Japan
By Kevin Thomas

Kevin Youkilis returned from Japan this month, leaving his Tohoku Rakuten team because of a foot injury. It didn’t take Youkilis long to catch up on baseball news in the states, including Mookie Betts and his on-base streak. “I heard about him,” Youkilis said. “Didn’t he reach 71 games?”

On Baseball: Fixing Red Sox may be easier than it seems
The solutions could be on the roster rather than through trades.
By Kevin Thomas

With one-third of the season over, the Boston Red Sox sit closer to the bottom of the American League East than the top. Now what? Does General Manager Ben Cherington see gaping holes in the team he constructed or minor leaks that can be patched?..

On Baseball: Red Sox show organizational depth in sweep of Rays
Youngster make an impact all weekend for Boston.

BOSTON — A day after we saw No. 62 pitching for the Red Sox, Boston had players wearing Nos. 68 and 70 in the lineup. Sounds like a spring training game. But these were your Boston Red Sox in June. The defending World Series champions are making a run to get back into the race. They won their seventh straight game Sunday with five rookies in the lineup. Two made their Major League debut Sunday, while another played a position for the first time in his life...

On Baseball: Sox promote Betts to Triple-A Pawtucket
Mookie Betts leaves Portland after a memorable two months.
By Kevin Thomas

Mookie Betts needs a challenge. The Boston Red Sox need an outfielder who can hit. Might there be a connection? Boston promoted Betts from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday. Betts played second base for Pawtucket Tuesday night, going 0 for 4 with a walk. “He’s really excelled in every area of the game,” Red Sox General Manager Ben Cherington said...

On Baseball: Swihart has the tools to build a career
Blake Swihart has added weight while continuing to progress as a catcher for the Sea Dogs.

BY KEVIN THOMAS

Jason Varitek gave a knowing look when asked about Red Sox catching prospect Blake Swihart. “He’s pretty good,” Varitek said slowly with a smile, indicating Swihart was more than just pretty good. But what about Swihart’s size? He was considered small for a catcher when the Red Sox took him in the first round of the 2011 draft...

On Baseball: Felix Doubrount working his way back
The Red Sox pitcher who is dealing with a shoulder issue has a positive outing in Portland.

BY KEVIN THOMAS

Felix Doubront caught the throw back from catcher Blake Swihart, paused only briefly, stepped on the mound and delivered his next pitch. For four innings, Doubront needed only 43 pitches, 31 for strikes...

On Baseball: Will Owens be the next to move up?
Red Sox prospect Henry Owens, a left-handed starting pitcher, is beginning to dominate Double-A.

BY KEVIN THOMAS STAFF WRITER

On Baseball: New Sea Dog comes from a true baseball family
Jonathan Roof has a father and an uncle who played in the major leagues.

BY KEVIN THOMAS..The three-story house in Paducah naturally has a basketball hoop out front. This is Kentucky, after all. But open the garage door at the Roof residence and you will find something else. A batting cage. Jonathan Roof, one of the newest Portland Sea Dogs, grew up in that house. His two older brothers played professional baseball, as did his father, four uncles and a few cousins...

On Baseball: Sea Dogs winning as well as developing talent
Portland has the franchise’s second-best record through 70 games.

BY KEVIN THOMAS..You hear so much about the prospects on this Portland Sea Dogs team and how they eventually will help the Boston Red Sox that you forget they’re also trying to win minor league games. These Sea Dogs are delivering. They return to Hadlock Field on Friday night with a 45-25 record nearly halfway through the 142-game season...
