MLB: Sox breeze past Twins

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Daniel Bard is trying to get back on track for Boston.

So far, he's been succeeding.

Mike Napoli hit a three-run homer, Clay Buchholz overcame leg soreness to pitch three scoreless innings and Bard struck out the side in the sixth in relief for the Red Sox in a 12-5 victory over a split squad of Minnesota Twins on Thursday.

The 27-year-old Bard went 5-6 with a 6.22 ERA last season, first being removed from the rotation and then being sent to the minors. With Triple-A Pawtucket, he posted a 7.03 ERA.

Twins top Red Sox

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Once he figured out what was working for him, Mike Pelfrey was nearly untouchable.

Pelfrey struck out five in three impressive innings to help the Minnesota Twins beat the Boston Red Sox 2-0 on Friday night.

"Thought it was good after the first inning," Pelfrey said. "I had a really good sinker tonight and I think I should have recognized it a little earlier."

It was Pelfrey's second scoreless outing in a row following a shaky spring debut with his new team. The big right-hander, dumped by the Mets in the offseason, is coming off Tommy John surgery last May and competing for a spot in Minnesota's rotation.

"Pelfrey was good," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Got his work in. His first inning was a little entertaining. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. After that, his fastball, he started trusting it, moving it in and out."

SPRING TRAINING: Red Sox get best of Twins' Pelfrey

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Mike Pelfrey is feeling good about his accelerated rehabilitation from reconstructive elbow surgery. Now, he needs to get the results he wants.

Pelfrey gave up five runs in his fourth spring training outing, and the Minnesota Twins lost to the Boston Red Sox 7-3 Thursday.

The big right-hander, who signed a one-year, $4-million contract with the Twins after five full big league seasons with the New York Mets, gave up six hits in just two innings

Flaherty sticks it to Sox

SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Buck Showalter has a hard decision ahead of him. He has to choose a fifth starter, and as he begins his third full season as Baltimore Orioles’ manager, there are some excellent choices.

Showalter has auditioned Jake Arrieta, Steve Johnson, Jair Jurrjens and Brian Matusz for the job. On Friday, it was Zach Britton’s turn, and he allowed just one hit in 3 2-3 innings as the Orioles and Boston Red Sox played to a 3-3 10-inning tie.

“That’s the best he’s thrown this spring. That was impressive,” Showalter said. “He’s real crisp. It’s good to see. Could have gotten deep in the ballgame today.”

With just over two weeks to make the decision, Baltimore’s manager isn’t giving any tips on the outcome.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) -- Long after they nearly came to blows, Sean Rodriguez still didn't like what Alfredo Aceves had to say.

The Red Sox right-hander hit the Rays' second baseman in the shoulder with a pitch in the fifth inning of Boston's 9-2 win over Tampa Bay on Saturday. Benches briefly cleared and Rodriguez had to be held back as the pair engaged in a shouting match.

"I said it was a split-finger, my bad," Aceves said. "I was not trying to hit him obviously. It was a 3-2 game, and you don't want anybody on base. I understand he was probably upset or frustrated because he got hit, and in the last at bat he got a homer."

MLB: Lester perfect as Red Sox beat Rays

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- Jon Lester was perfect. Boston's entire pitching staff nearly was on the day.

Lester retired 18 consecutive batters and combined with his bullpen to hold the Tampa Bay Rays without a baserunner until one out in the ninth, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 5-1 victory Sunday.

Jason Bourgeois reached on an infield hit in the ninth against Marco Duarte, Boston's fourth pitcher.

Lester, Boston's projected opening-day starter, struck out six and threw 53 of 79 pitches for strikes. He has allowed two runs, six hits and four walks over five starts and 20 innings, striking out 16.

Sox lose as Matusz solid for 5 innings

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Left-hander Brian Matusz, competing for a spot in Baltimore’s rotation, pitched five solid innings and the Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 8-7 Tuesday. Matusz is among a number of contenders for the No. 5 spot. He allowed one run and six hits, striking out two and walking one.

MLB: Yankees beat Boston without Jeter

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Eduardo Nunez might find himself in the middle of things come opening day.

Nunez got a hit, drove in a run and made an error while filling in at shortstop for Derek Jeter as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 4-0 Wednesday.

Before the game, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he didn't know whether Jeter will be available to play in the opener on April 1. The 38-year-old captain got an anti-inflammatory shot in his surgically repaired left ankle and missed his second straight exhibition game.

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) -- Toronto closer Casey Janssen opened in impressive fashion.

Janssen struck out two during a perfect seventh inning in his spring debut as the Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0 Friday.

"First time out there, I guess it couldn't have gone any better," Janssen said.

Janssen, who finished with 22 saves last season, had surgery in November to address lingering shoulder soreness. After striking out Lyle Overbay and Mauro Gomez, the right-hander got a grounder from Mike Carp.
