Tom Caron: Only a quack thinks Buchholz doctors the ball

BOSTON - "If you aren't cheating, you aren't trying."

It's one of the oldest sayings in baseball. It also has become part of the conversation surrounding Clay Buchholz, who started Monday night's game against the Twins.

Tom Caron: Hitting slump fuels Sox woes

BOSTON - The Red Sox begin a nine-game road trip in St. Petersburg Tuesday night. It's the start of a challenging journey that will take them from Tampa Bay to Minneapolis to Chicago.

Let's hope they remember to pack their good bats, not the ones that let them down through a seven-game homestand that ended Sunday with a 12-4 loss to the Blue Jays. The Sox scored just 29 runs in their first seven home games this month. That's about 2 runs a game fewer than they were scoring in April. They finished April 18-8, tying the franchise record for wins in that month. They're 4-8 since.

Tom Caron: A long way to go, but Sox building good karma

BOSTON - Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies is the final home game of May for the Red Sox. They'll wrap up this strange little two-game series before packing their bags to begin a road trip against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Boston and Philadelphia in a home-and-home series? Sounds like an NHL weekend circa 1972. Maybe they'll ride in adjoining train cars down to Philly to continue the battle.

Tom Caron: Sox are likable, winning

BOSTON - When the Red Sox resume their nine-game homestand at Fenway Tuesday night, they will begin July with 50 wins for just the fourth time in history.

They're leading the AL East by four games and have done an incredible job putting the dismal memories of a 93-loss 2012 season behind them.

The ballpark was electric over the weekend. Sellout crowds watched the Sox take 5 of 6 games against the Rockies and Blue Jays. Summer had fi

Tom Caron: Red Sox competing for coverage
BOSTON - It's tough getting a headline in the New England sports pages these days.

Just ask the first-place Red Sox. Last week, they finished off their best homestand in more than three years, an 8-1 stretch that included two walk-off wins.

That made eight walk-offs this season for the Sox. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that's the most by a Boston team before the All-Star break since 1954.

Tom Caron: Cultivate, keep prospects
Here's what Red Sox GM Ben Cherington will be looking for as the trade deadline approaches.

BOSTON — What should the Red Sox do?

The Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline is 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Red Sox are battling for the AL East lead and are in perfect position to add talent to the roster. It's a far cry from a year ago when they were getting ready to unload top players and hundreds of millions in salary to reload for next season.

Tom Caron: Shuffling is in the cards for Red Sox
BOSTON — The evolution of the 2013 Boston Red Sox continues.

It's hard to imagine a first-place team being this unsettled. Division leaders are supposed to be solid teams by mid-August. Starting lineups are set in stone.

Not John Farrell's team. The manager has been shifting roster spots all season.

Tom Caron: Schedule won't make for home-free September
The Red Sox have a tough stretch ahead of them, and being well-rested will be key.

BOSTON — Now they can get back to baseball.

The Red Sox had Monday off, a much needed day of rest. They returned from the West Coast after going 4-2 against the Giants and Dodgers.

They survived a weekend surrounded by hype as they faced former teammates Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford for the first time since the mega-trade that sent $264 million in salary to the West Coast.

Tom Caron: It's September -- do you know where your Sox are?

BOSTON - It's September, and the Red Sox are in first place. It feels like it has been an eternity since they've been there, but it's only been two years.

September has been the cruelest month for the Sox over the past couple of seasons.

In 2011, the Sox suffered one of the worst September collapses in the history of the sport, going 7-20 down the stretch to blow a 91/2-game lead

Tom Caron: Red Sox have removed that cursed panic button
BOSTON - It took a loss to remind us how different these Boston Red Sox are from their predecessors.

Sunday's loss in New York was one of the strangest games we've seen this season.

For the second time in four days Boston rallied off the greatest closer in baseball history to tie the game in the ninth. Then rookie Brandon Workman lost the game with a wild pitch, allowing Ichiro Suzuki to steal a walk-off win as he scored from third.
