SPRING TRAINING: Lester perfect for Sox

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Jon Lester is eager to put last season behind him. His first spring training outing was a good start.

Lester pitched two scoreless, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

Lester retired all six batters he faced, striking out one. He needed 24 pitches -- 17 strikes -- to get through the two innings, six in the second. All but one of Lester's pitches were fastballs.

Lester turns in solid outing in Sox's loss
Lefty yields just one run over four frames; Gomes notches RBI double

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Pirates brought most of their Opening Day lineup to Wednesday's road game at JetBlue Park, and it showed during a 9-3 victory over the Red Sox.

The good news for Boston is that ace Jon Lester turned in a solid performance despite lacking his best command. The lefty gave up two hits and a run over four innings, walking three and striking out three.

"Physically it was good," said Lester. "Everything felt fine. It was nice to be able to get up and down four times, especially after having a little bit of a long second inning."
