Twin City Thunder to skate in USPHL at Norway Savings Bank...

...“We want the high-end players, but we also want the right players,” Hodge said. “So it’s kind of a mix. Just because you’re going to have a great player doesn’t mean he’s going to be a great teammate. We want to make sure we have a great player, a great teammate, and a great kid in the community. This whole thing is going to revolve around our kids being involved in the community and doing things out there — working, having jobs, going to schools, doing things like that that’s going to make people want to see them play.”

The Thunder will be a part of a league that has quickly become a junior hockey force over the past five years.

The USPHL started in 2013, and just this past year created the NCDC — the National Collegiate Development Conference — an arm of the league that provides a high-level, tuition-free option for top college-bound hockey prospects. The league counts current NHL standouts Jack Eichel (Buffalo), Charlie Coyle (Minnesota) and Jimmy Vesey (N.Y. Rangers) among its alumni, as well as many top scorers in Division I and Division III college hockey.

“We were going down a different couple avenues and trying to put all the pieces together to figure out what we wanted to do,” Gray said. “We met with several leagues and the USPHL made the most sense for where we want to head.”

While the Thunder will begin play in the Premier division — which itself has had hundreds of college hockey commitments — the organization already has an eye toward taking the program to the top level — the NCDC — for 2019-20.

USPHL: Twin City Thunder to Auburn

Doug Friedman ready to hit ground running with USPHL's Twin City Thunder

AUBURN — Doug Friedman knows the challenges that lay ahead, but he is ready to make the Twin City Thunder a top-tier organization in the United States Premier Hockey League.

The 46-year old coach, who grew up in Cape Elizabeth, was introduced as the Thunder’s inaugural head coach at a news conference Monday morning.

“There’s always going to be challenge in recruiting,” Friedman said. “There are so many choices for families these days, especially at the junior hockey level. I think one of the things we are going to do is we are going to be honest what we are offering and we are going to be honest about the league, our approach.”

Friedman's experience key for Twin City Thunder

... “(Owners) Ben (Gray) and Dan (Hodge) have been successful with a lot of their endeavors,” Friedman said. “They have a good vision as to what they want, and that’s one of the things that drew me to this opportunity.”

For the past four years, Friedman, who played seven professional seasons after skating four years at Boston University, has been the athletic director and head boys’ ice hockey coach at Kents Hill School.

Friedman also has recent experience with the USPHL. Just prior to taking the job at Kents Hill in 2014, Friedman coached with the Portland Junior Pirates in the EJHL and then the USPHL’s Premier division. And while he understands that the junior hockey experience isn’t for everyone, he also knows how valuable it can be for those who choose that path.

Re: USPHL: Twin City Thunder sign Jeromey Rancourt, Lewisto

Twin City Thunder sign Jeromey Rancourt, former Lewiston High School standout

...The Twin City Thunder announced Monday morning that they’ve signed Rancourt to play for the United States Premier Hockey League’s newest franchise beginning in the fall.

“It will be nice being closer to home,” Rancourt said. “It’ll definitely be easier on travel, and on my family, being able to help out.”

Rancourt is the team’s first player, and his signing is more than just symbolic.

“Jeromey has played in the Maine Moose program for five years,” Thunder owner and GM (and Moose owner) Ben Gray said. “The level of play he brings to the table is high. In the past year, he’s piqued the interest of a couple of DI programs already, and he’s a great addition to our team.”
