Sports facility set to revitalize Piscataquis County

... The Portland-based organization recently purchased the space, and will be shortly gutting it in order to build a multi-million dollar indoor sports facility. The building will support a turf field that will be usable year-round for nearly any usual outdoor sport, and is planned for a winter opening. According to Libra Foundation president Jere Michelson, this part of Piscataquis County was an ideal location for a variety of reasons.

"This really made the most sense geographically pulling from Greenville, pulling from Bangor. And it made the most sense from a community standpoint," he said.

Long winters and lack of funding have made certain recreational sports hard to come by in the area, but the foundation aims to provide an outlet for people of all ages to get active. Foxcroft Academy is also expected to work with the foundation and use the new spot as a practice home. After the completion of the turf facility, the plan is to expand further back on the property and build a hockey arena.

"I don't know that there's a better way to spend money," Michelson said. "I mean think about this. Hockey's been gone in this town a long time, this is going to bring it back. The youth programs, seniors, adults, everybody's going to be able to use this facility." ... uis-county
