Waterville, Winslow set to merge for 2017-18 season

Waterville, Winslow could be headed for hockey co-op
Waterville school board expected to discuss at meeting in June.

...“We approved it,” Winslow athletic director Jim Bourgoin said. “We had no opposition at all.”

The possibility of a co-op between the two programs surfaced in the winter. While Waterville captured its second consecutive Class B state championship last month, its roster featured 17 players, including eight seniors. Winslow finished last in a 10-team Class B North region with only 13 players on its roster.

Two primary concerns were raised at a Waterville school board meeting April 5. First, people wanted to know the minimum number of players a program needs to field a competitive team. Secondly, others asked about available ice time in the area.

Waterville, Winslow set to merge for 2017-18 season

... “Obviously, we didn’t want to do this,” said Waterville Coach Dennis Martin, who has led the Purple Panthers to three state titles in 14 seasons. “But it had to be done so that we could have hockey.”

Waterville graduated eight seniors from its 17-player roster and was faced with only a handful of incoming freshmen next season. Martin estimated that there would only be as many as 11 players for next season. Winslow had 13 players last winter, but it didn’t graduate anyone.

Waterville, Winslow to join hockey forces
Proud traditions will come together to form boys varsity co-op beginning next season.

..... The Black Tigers practiced at the Camden National Bank Ice Vault in Hallowell.

Winslow athletic director Jim Bourgoin said during the spring that his school only planned to approach Waterville about forming a co-op.

“I think the only other piece of the puzzle was Sukee Arena,” Leach said. “If Sukee was still running, would they have done this (co-op)? In the end, I think it’s a positive thing for both schools.”

Waterville and Winslow certainly will lean on their familiarity in the beginning. In the past it may have bred contempt, it’s now a building block.

Former Rivals Winslow and Waterville to Co-op in Hockey Starting Next Season

The class B north hockey scene will take a big turn this winter, as bitter rivals, Winslow and Waterville have decided to create a co-op for hockey due to declining numbers. They reportedly talked about it this year, but, Waterville was stacked for one more run. The Purple Panthers are two time defending state class B champions.

New beginning: Waterville/Winslow hockey team get used to merger
With new team identity (RiverHawks) teams skate together as 1.

...“I’m excited,” said Winslow senior Nick West. “Last year wasn’t even fun, playing with 12 skaters every game and losing 15 out of our 18 games. I was excited for a new opportunity.”

Not everyone was excited from the get-go.

“Honestly, Waterville kids weren’t too happy about it,” Wheeler said. “But I think as we realized that’s what needed to happen, and we started having meetings and communicating with them a little more and we realized what was going on, everybody was OK with it.”

“The first two years of my high school career were fun,” West added. “But hockey is dying around here, anyway, so (a merger) was bound to happen at some point. I’m glad it happened my senior year instead of going through another year that just wasn’t fun.”

Old vs. New: Waterville, Winslow team up on ice
New Kennebec RiverHawks enter historic campaign.

...“It already feels like we’re one team,” Waterville senior Chase Wheeler said.

Despite all of the nervousness, analysis and hand-wringing that came with the proposed co-op, the RiverHawks are coming together quite nicely. With many of the players having grown up playing in youth leagues together, it’s not as awkward as outsiders might imagine.

“They’ve been talking about merging Waterville and Winslow schools and teams for years. This one, when I really heard a legitimate thing come up, my feeling was ‘Well, they need to,'” said first-year head coach Jon Hart, a former standout player for Waterville. “I don’t see anything other than kids being kids. I don’t see any division, and that’s the way we’re preaching it. There is no division. That’s why we went with the new colors and the new name.”
