Scarborough:: promotes longtime assistant as new coach

Scarborough hockey future may be in doubt
A lack of a rink last season led to odd practice times and traveling to Lewiston for home games.

...Hope was on the horizon in 2015 when a nonprofit group, Friends of Scarborough Hockey, worked with the Town Council to use municipal-owned land near the high school for a privately financed $5.5 million arena. The project never left the planning stages and was dropped when the group couldn’t raise the money, lacking major donors.

“It’s tough on families and it’s tough on our community,” LeGage said, “but we want to continue to offer the sport of ice hockey.”

There has been interest again in building a rink in Scarborough. Chuck Bradish, president of Scarborough Boys Hockey Boosters, said hockey is a “strong community presence” in Scarborough and the energy to solve the problem is there.

Scarborough promotes longtime assistant as new coach for boys’ hockey
Jacob Brown, a Red Storm assistant coach for the last seven years, replaces legendary coach Norm Gagne.

Longtime assistant coach Jacob Brown has been promoted to be the head coach for the boys’ hockey team at Scarborough High.

Brown replaces Norm Gagne, who left Scarborough after eight seasons to return to his alma mater, Edward Little. Gagne has 715 career wins and seven state championships, including the Class A title with the Red Storm in 2015.

Brown, a middle school teacher in Scarborough, served as an assistant coach for the last seven years.

“Coach Brown joins an outstanding family of coaches here in Scarborough,” said Mike LeGage, the Scarborough athletic director, in a press release. “His expertise will provide Scarborough’s student-athletes with the best opportunity to learn those important life skills essential for success on and off the ice.”

Brown was a four-year varsity player at Lewiston High.

Former Lewiston standout to coach Scarborough

...Brown, a Lewiston native who played four seasons as a defenseman for the Blue Devils, is also a middle school teacher and middle school athletic director at Scarborough, and for seven seasons, coached alongside veteran bench boss Norm Gagne, who left Scarborough for his alma mater, Edward Little High School, this spring.

“I learned a lot from Norm,” Brown said. “How he interacts with the kids, the passion he has for the game, and for teaching the game, is amazing. The kids build off that energy.”

“I know the program is in good hands,” Gagne told the Sun Journal after taking the Edward Little job in April. “I have a lot of confidence in Jake, and we made him an associate coach the past couple of years. He’s ready.”
