Maine Moose capture 18U national hockey championship
Junior team goes undefeated en route to title win over New Hampshire.

For a group accustomed to winning championships, this was a first.

Buxton’s Tanner McClure broke a tie midway through the third period and Bangor’s Derek Fournier made a game-preserving save in the final seconds, lifting the Maine Moose to a 3-2 win over the New Hampshire Avalanche in the 2017 18U Tier II 2A junior hockey national championship game Monday at Suburban Ice in East Lansing, Michigan. It marked the first time in program history that the 18U team won the national title, after winning a third state championship earlier this season.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Moose coach Jeff Ross said. “But with the talent we have, we felt like we had the experience and the background to do it. It was just a matter of getting it done.”

Malone on National Championship team

Josh Malone of Hodgdon is back in the County after capturing his second national Jr Tier 2 Championship with the Maine Moose. Malone says winning a second time is very sweet

Josh Malone:" It was great we went down there with a lot of intensity like we were there for business."
Malone was a senior on the Houlton Hodgdon Blackhawks this year and once that season was over he played with the Moose again

Area hockey players compete in Nationals

Matthew and Michael Deveaux of Brunswick both won state championships with the Maine Moose under-18 and under-16 teams this past November, earning the opportunity to compete at the 2017 USA Hockey Nationals April 5-10.

Matthew’s U-18 team competed in Lansing, Mich., while Michael’s U-16 squad was in Dallas.

McClure, Maine Moose repeat as national champs

EAST LANSING, Michigan, and BUXTON — The Maine Moose have won it all: They’re national champions, and Bonny Eagle’s own Tanner McClure gets the credit for the goal that won it all – the last goal of the last game. McClure struck midway through the third period of the tournament final, securing a 3-2 triumph over the New Hampshire Avalanche in a back-and-forth battle.

It’s McClure’s second consecutive national title as a Moose; he won last year as a member of the U16 club. This time around, he’s on the U18 outfit. Specifically, the Moose compete in the 2A Division of USA Hockey’s Youth Tier II.

The win closes McClure’s tenure with the team. “This is my last year with the Moose, and what a way to end it,” he says. “Four years has brought lots of memories and victories that I will cherish forever. Four state championships and national appearances … and back-to-back national championships, the past two years, was the perfect ending to the story.”
