Noble dissolves coop hockey accord with Wells

Wells boys’ hockey players left out in the cold
Noble decides to drop the Warriors from its co-op team while seeking a merger with Marshwood.

... Noble, located in North Berwick, broke up with Wells because it believes it has a new partner: Marshwood High of South Berwick. The neighboring school districts combine for other activities, including a middle- school hockey team called the Knight Hawks.

“We thought it would be helpful to our players (to stay together),” said Noble Principal Joe Findlay. “We would also like to have the ability to form a (junior varsity) program – with Marshwood, we could have a JV program in place – giving our players a chance to develop their skills on the JV.”

But a Noble-Marshwood team hasn’t been decided on, according to Marshwood Athletic Director Rich Buzzell.

“We’ve talked about it. It kind of makes sense,” Buzzell said. “But it’s only a request at this point. They asked us to consider it. We’re going to look at our options.”

Noble dissolves coop hockey accord with Wells

... Booster club president Ken Webb did not mince words via email.

"The Noble-Wells Boosters Organization, coaches, alumni and many supporters in many surrounding communities have worked extremely hard over the years to establish and grow this program with great success," wrote Webb. "To dismantle this program with such disregard for all of these people and especially the current student athletes involved is unconscionable. There is no arguing that the 'Administrative Team' responsible for this at Noble clearly has no problem completely abandoning the Wells players. I am a patient, logical person, and would be very interested in hearing why this coop is being dissolved so that another can be formed. Mind you, with a team that actually had a JV program last year — so not hurting for numbers. This appears to me to be a blatantly selfish, lazy, unethical decision upon the part of the Noble administration."

According to parent and booster club member Judi Marsh, the makeup of this past year's team was 11 players from Noble and eight from Wells. Marsh said the KnightHawks, the middle school cooperative hockey team comprised of players from Marshwood, Traip, Noble and Wells, has one third of its players from Wells. Webb said Wells parents started the program.

Wells searches for new hockey co-op

WELLS (WGME) -- The high school hockey season ended last Saturday, but not for Wells.
The Warriors, who had been co-op partners with Noble for the past six years, were notified on Monday that next season Noble would instead be teaming up with Marshwood, seeing that both schools reside in Berwick.

But that has created a tough situation for Wells and the eight varsity hockey players who are hoping to play on a new team next season.
