New hockey team introduces itself to Portland; name still to come

...The new franchise, to be born from the ashes of the former Alaska Aces, is owned by Comcast-Spectacor, which also owns the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League.

The new Portland team, which will fill the void left by the Portland Pirates after the 2015-16 American Hockey League season, won't be affiliated with the Flyers, who have an ECHL affiliation with the Reading Royals.

The team also won't start playing until the 2018-19 season, giving the off-the-ice officials time to prepare the on-ice product.

"We're trying to set it up the right way," Portland GM and former NHL player Danny Briere said. "I'm glad we have all that extra time. Although I would like to see us playing right away. It's going to be a long winter."

Here’s how to pitch a name for Portland’s new pro hockey team
Management of the ECHL franchise announces a contest in which fans can submit suggestions by Aug. 14.

...After announcing a contest to name the team Thursday morning on the floor of the arena, Goldberg joined half a dozen other speakers, all wearing ECHL hats and gripping hockey sticks, on a makeshift stage. He said it is important to seek public input for a franchise that will follow the Portland Pirates (1993-2016) and Maine Mariners (1977-1992), both members of the American Hockey League, which is considered a rung above the ECHL and one below the National Hockey League on the ladder of professional hockey.

New Portland hockey deal promises financial win for county-owned arena
Having the hockey team play its 36 home games – more if it makes the playoffs – at Cross Insurance Arena is expected to provide more than $162,000 in revenue.

...Trustees of the Cumberland County-owned arena said they were sensitive to the idea that the same parent company would be essentially both landlord and prime tenant in the arrangement.

“We were aware that there may be a visual issue,” Mitchell Berkowitz, chairman of the trustees who oversee the operation of the arena, said of the appearance of a possible conflict of interest.
