Greely's Cinderella run ends with agonizing OT loss to York in regional fina

LEWISTON—Greely and York had to make up for lost time and once again, the rivals penned a playoff epic.

The Rangers and Wildcats, who produced some of the most memorable and improbable playoff finishes you could ever hope to see, hadn’t met in the postseason for five years prior to Wednesday evening’s boys’ hockey Class B South Final at the Colisee, but once they renewed acquaintances, it was business as usual.

There were ebbs and flows and 45 minutes weren’t enough to determine a winner.

And it resulted in a painful ending for Greely.

The Wildcats defeat Greely in overtime, 3-2.

... Jacob Martin scored twice for York before Andrew Bertolini won it in overtime.

“My teammates made the play and forced the puck up to me,” Bertolini said. “All I had to do was put it home.”

Freshmen Matt Kramlich and Jake MacDonald scored for Greely (14-7).

“They’re both really good young players and they’ve been producing all year,” Greely Coach Barry Mothes said. “They blended in really well with the veteran guys on the team.”

Class B South: York defeats Greely in OT for regional title

... Martin came from nowhere to tie the game at two while the Wildcats were killing Colin Palmer's penalty. The Rangers left the puck at center ice after a miscommunication. Martin picked the puck up and skated in on a breakaway, goaded Greely goalie Josh Lawless into making the first move and shot it into the net with 3:19 remaining.

It was his second goal of the game.

Bertolini then sent York to the state title game with a shot from the low slot.

"My teammates forced the puck up to me and all I had to was put it home," Bertolini said.

..."The one thing about these guys is I've never seen them quit," Powers said. "They were tired, no doubt about it, but they kept working hard and in that third period and when we got into overtime, there was a lot of back and forth and both teams were going at it and it wasn't a fluke goal.

"I am delighted to see (Andrew) have that kind of success. I am sure it will be a moment he will remember forever. He's scored a bunch of big goals for us, but none on this type of stage. I like to look at the moment and one thing you didn't see was him skating off by himself and banging up against the glass. He went right toward his teammates and they just swarmed him; that as much as scoring the goal probably means as much. That was a team effort, that was a team goal and the defense worked their hearts out out there."

Hair and Heart Earn Waterville Hockey “Family” Shot to Defend State Title

Waterville hockey hopes depth plays factor in state title quest
Key contributions from 2nd line key to Purple Panthers' playoff run.

... It’s a second line for Waterville (19-1-0) that’s playing more like a first line at times during the team’s playoff run.

“For a while, it was ‘just don’t mess up and give the first line a break,'” Menoudarakos said Wednesday afternoon after practice. “But now I feel like we’ve balanced that out a bit and gotten some equal scoring. One night if the first line’s not getting it going, and vice versa, we’ve got to pick each other up. We’re just one big family, so we’ve got to cover each other’s backs.”

Menoudarakos might be the most pleasant surprise for Waterville this season. He could also accurately be labeled the team’s only surprise. As the only freshman on the team, he broke preseason as part of a little-used third line.

Seniors leave indelible mark on a Waterville hockey program that faces possible change
As Purple Panthers chase 2nd straight state title, questions arise about future makeup of program.

...But what will keep the program going after this season?

With 17 players listed on the roster, the departure of nine seniors will have a palpable effect beyond simple production, raising the possibility of entering into a co-operative arrangement next season.

Dennis Martin, in his 14th season as Waterville head coach, acknowledged some uncertainty with the program — a traditional power dating to their first state championship in 1927.

“I want to stay just ‘Waterville,'” Martin said. “But we’re looking into things, I know that. Yes, it could be a possibility, but we don’t know what the numbers are going to be.”

Lewiston seniors looking to defend state title

... The trio all play defense on a Blue Devils team that is known for its propensity to score goals. They may not make the highlights, but that's fine with them. They know what they mean to the team.

"If you look at all the games, not a lot of shots get put on us. It's not looked at as much," Story said. "The whole team as a defensive group, it's unbelievable, just the way we work together on defense."

"They'd be the first people to tell you that we don't talk about individual defense, we talk about team defense," Lewiston coach Jamie Belleau said. "And certainly those three guys, in their roles, in their responsibilities on the ice in any given shift, they do a good job and they complement the rest of the guys on the ice at any given time."

Waterville, York meet for Class B hockey title
Panthers aiming for 2nd straight championship, while Wildcats look for 1st title since 2011.

OUTLOOK: York is riding an 11-game unbeaten streak (10-0-1) into the state title game. Balanced scoring and three forward lines have been the keys for the Wildcats, who hadn’t been to the playoffs since 2012 prior to this season… Waterville has gone 40-2-1 over the last two seasons and hasn’t lost to a Class B opponent during that stretch. The Purple Panthers average 8.05 goals per game this season and seek their 22nd state championship in school history.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: York: Tommy Carr, Jr., F (24-14-38), Jake Martin, Jr., F (18-15-33), Julius Lundgren, Sr., F (17-20-37), Keenan Gamache, Jr., G (1.50 GAA, .917 pct.); Waterville: Justin Wentworth, Sr., F (44-27-71), Jackson Aldrich, Sr., F (31-45-76); Andrew Roderigue, Sr. D (19-34-53); Nathan Pinnette, Sr., G (1.83 GAA, .895 pct.).
