Cheverus takes down Portland/Deering again

PORTLAND—Since it traveled to a Jesuit tournament in Chicago earlier this month to take part against top-notch, out-of-state competition, Cheverus’ boys’ hockey team has had its way with every foe back home in Maine.

Including one of its fiercest rivals.

Thursday evening at the Troubh Ice Arena, the Stags showed how explosive they can be, as they erupted for three goals in 61 seconds to take a quick lead over Portland/Deering.

... Cheverus (6-3), which moved into third place in the Class A South Heal point standings – passing Portland – controlled the first two periods, stretching its 3-0 lead in the first period to 4-0 after the second.

“We had a nice start tonight with the quick three goals,” Cheverus Coach Dan Lucas said. “I thought for the first two periods we were pretty sound. We didn’t give up a lot of shots and we stayed out of the penalty box. If you have those two things, you have a good chance (at winning).”

The tone of the game was set in the opening minutes when both teams hit anything that was close. The result was the Bulldogs (6-4) didn’t register their first shot on goal until 3:37 had elapsed. The Stags went 1:08 longer before landing a shot on Portland goalie Sam Segal (17 saves).
