Re: Gaziano Semi-Finalists Announced

My Picks:

OFFENSIVE:
-Jack Webb: Thornton Academy

Jack was simply the best I saw this year in Maine. He has been a two year starter at TA and a great student athlete. I think he will win this year, because he is not only very good, but well-known around ME too. The only lineman I have seen that I think could challenge Webb (and has a bunch of times) is Zachary Klein of BE.

DEFENSIVE:
-Arlo Pike: Bonny Eagle

Arlo was a monster this year for BE and was probably tied with Griffin in my mind for best defensive lineman I came across. I think the D-Line semi-finalist group is stacked with talent and is quite a toss-up for me. My other picks would be Griffin and Parmenter.

Finalists Announced for Gaziano Lineman Awards

Scholarship for Maine high school linemen is the largest of its kind in the country
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine - The selection committee for the 2017 Frank J. Gaziano Memorial Offensive and Defensive Lineman Awards today announced the six finalists for what is the largest high school scholarship of its kind in the country.

The finalists were named this week after the selection committee interviewed each of the semi-finalists to determine the finalists.

"It is clear the committee has a great group of student athletes to choose from again this year. Based on their accomplishments and the character each of the finalists has proven to be dedicated to their sport, academics and their communities," said Kane. "On behalf of the Gaziano family, congratulations to all the finalists and their families and I am looking forward to meeting them and helping announce the winner on January 27 at the Augusta Civic Center."

In 2012, National Distributors, Inc. increased the scholarship amount to $5,000 for the two winners and $1,000 for the two runners-up making it the largest high school football scholarship of its kind in the country. Funding for the $14,000 in total scholarships is provided by National Distributors, Inc. The selection committee will also be securing sponsorships ranging from $50 - $500 so players and families of the student-athletes can attend the awards luncheon ceremony free of charge. Excellent choices by the committee. Klein might be the best lineman I have seen in the last five or six years or so. He is tough, quick, and experienced. Pike was a beast for the past two seasons and I can't go against him on the defensive side.

Best of luck to all of these young men. The two speakers sound awesome too, especially Mars...impressive young man for sure.

Bonny Eagle sweeps Gaziano Lineman Awards

...Pike was named the Frank J. Gaziano Memorial Defensive Lineman and Klein the Offensive Lineman for 2017 at an awards banquet held at the Augusta Civic Center, making Bonny Eagle the first school to sweep the awards in their seven-year history.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Pike, who was an SMAA first-team all-star as a defensive tackle. “We’ve known each other since we were probably 4 years old. It’s a great honor. I’m just as happy that he won.”

“I didn’t imagine (a sweep),” said Klein, a left tackle and nose guard who earned the SMAA’s Gerry Raymond Award as the conference’s top lineman. “I don’t want to say I was shocked, though. But everyone here is an excellent player. Any combination of offensive and defensive players winning wouldn’t have been a shock.”

Pike and Klein were among three finalists on each side of the line selected among a total of 19 nominees from around the state. The award is the largest high school football scholarship of its kind in the country — $5,000 — to the winners, along with a trophy and leather jacket.
