47th Fitzpatrick Trophy winner: Owen Garrard of Scarborough

Postby wmtwsportsprod » Wed Dec 06, 2017 8:24 pm

the 12 semifinalists
Tim Albert-Leavitt
Jack Bryant-Falmouth
Nick Clawson-Foxcroft
Owen Garrard-Scarborough
Grant Hartley-EL
Cam Houde-TA
Colby Lee-MDI
Nolan Potter-Wells
Jordan Roddy-Cony
Connor Sirois-Bonny Eagle
Ryan Weare-Cape Elizabeth
Sean Whalen-Madison

There is the list...looks like one that represents whole state...i am sure there are names not listed that people will ask why..also 4 classes represented fairly evenly
4 Class A players
3 Class B players
2 Class C players
3 Class D players

Few thoughts...No Marshwood or MCI represenatives...teams that won state titles....With Marshwood i would say it would be because they just split the stats at so much...MCI i cant say for sure
You knew Bonny Eagle would have a person on list...the only question was who..
And for those that call this the Portland award...notice no Cheverus, Deering or Portland player listed..

Locals Recognized as Fitzpatrick Award Semifinalists
PORTLAND, MAINE (WABI)- The 2017 Fitzpatrick Award semifinalists announced today. It's the 47th season the trophy will go to the state's top high school football player. There are 12 semifinalists. The locals are Foxcroft Academy's Nick Clawson. He quarterbacked the Ponies to the northern Maine championship in class D and a state runner up finish.

Semifinalists announced for 47th Fitzpatrick Trophy
Owen Garrard of Scarborough and Nolan Potter of Wells are among the 12 candidates after leading their teams to state championships.
... Owen Garrard of Scarborough is another powerful running back/linebacker on the semifinal list. The best player on the state’s best team, Garrard rushed for 1,204 yards with 24 touchdowns and made 77 tackles (10 for loss) as the Red Storm won their first Class A state title. He scored five touchdowns in the 57-0 championship win against Windham.

Even when Garrard didn’t have the ball, he impacted plays.

“He was a great pass protector and a great lead blocker, especially on our sweeps,” said Coach Lance Johnson. “There were plays where he was knocking two guys down.”

Five of the 12 semifinalists are quarterbacks, including Jack Bryant of Falmouth. A three-year starter, Bryant became a dual threat this season, rushing for 1,036 yards and 18 touchdowns, and passing for another 1,509 yards with 17 scores. He also started at safety.

Very pleased to see Cameron Houde on this list. He was a monster on defense the past two seasons for TA and he deserves all of the recognition.

As stated before, my pick is Bryant and then Garrard.

It's not a bad list at all... However, I do feel as though Michael Norton from Oceanside could have been a semi-finalist with these stats:

2,111 total yards (1,603 rushing, 242 receiving and 171 on special teams) and 30 touchdowns, while averaging 12.6 yards per carry. He also had 94 tackles on defense and 10 sacks from the linebacker spot, earning him first-team all-conference honors at running back and linebacker.

And Oceanside made the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row which is something they have not done in quite some time.

AB,

I don't think they can mess it up from here on out. All three candidates are great ones.

Just from a press perspective, Garrard is definitely getting the most love thus far. I predict that he will be the winner when it all comes out in January, but like I said, it could be any of the three.
