Bucksport offense looks to roll past Foxcroft in title game

..."We're the under dogs," running back Luke Wardwell said Thursday. "Ready to go."

Perhaps they view themselves that way because they felt as such following their loss to Foxcroft earlier this year, a 45-18 blowout that saw the Ponies dominate the second half and give them the upper edge in seeding towards the end of the season. But the team also felt handicapped going into that matchup as a result of outside circumstances.

"The week that we played them we were all sick," Wardwell said. "And we only had 12 kids at practice. And we have about 36 kids on the team. So we really couldn't practice all week

BDN preview: Class D North - No. 2 Bucksport (6-3) at No. 1 Foxcroft Academy (7-2), 7 p.m. Friday:

These teams are where they were expected to be when preseason practices began in mid-August. Foxcroft earned the home-field advantage largely based on its 45-18 victory over the Golden Bucks in Week 4. This rematch includes the two favorites for LTC Player of the Year in quarterbacks Nick Clawson of Foxcroft and Chase Carmichael of Bucksport. Clawson has passed for 1,019 yards and 13 touchdowns while rushing for 851 yards and 17 additional scores, while Carmichael set a conference record with 1,573 passing yards during the regular season and now has 1,761 yards through the air with 23 touchdown passes after Bucksport’s semifinal win over No. 3 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln. Both teams have other weapons, particularly junior wideout Hyatt Smith of Foxcroft (27 catches, 598 yards, 10 TDs) and Bucksport junior Carter Tolmasoff, who shifted from receiver to halfback last week with starter Lucas Wardwell sidelined by illness and amassed 154 rushing yards and 97 receiving yards.

Foxcroft tops Bucksport for ‘D’ North football title

... Clawson rushed for 180 yards and one touchdown, passed for 99 yards and another score and had two of the Ponies’ four pass interceptions on defense.

“It was cold, and it was physical,” said Clawson.

Senior defensive end R.J. Nelson also came up big for Foxcroft with a blocked punt that led to a touchdown and a 70-yard pass interception for another score.

“Bucksport has a great passing attack and that’s what we prepped for,” said Nelson. “The wind helped us a little for two quarters when they were going into it, and I think our athletes could stay with them down the field so that forced them to throw the ball short.”

Foxcroft capitalized on the stiff wind at its back to build a 20-0 first-quarter lead that it took into halftime.
