MDI football on a quest for redemption

MOUNT DESERT ISLAND - It has been 354 days since Mount Desert Island football was crushed by Wells 44-0 in the Class C state title game.

“It’s definitely a big goal of mine to get back because last year we did get embarrassed in the state game so it would be a nice chance to redeem ourselves,” MDI quarterback Andrew Phelps said.

But before MDI can have that chance at redemption it first has a date with Maine Central Institute in the Class C North title game.

BDN preview: Class C North - No. 6 Maine Central Institute (6-4) at No. 1 Mount Desert Island (9-1), 7 p.m. Saturday:

This looms as battle of the ground games, with MDI’s T-formation accounting for the bulk of the Trojans’ 40.6 points per game and MCI running at peak form during the last month as the Huskies have regrouped from some early-season injuries. Both teams also have passing games that must be respected, with MDI senior Andrew Phelps one of the division’s veteran quarterbacks and MCI passing for more than 200 yards in its semifinal victory at Winslow. MDI has won nine straight games, including a 35-24 decision over MCI in Week 5 that was 35-0 at halftime. MCI has won four of five games behind the backfield combination of Adam Bertrand, Pedro Matos and Seth Bussell and wideout David Young.

MCI knocks off MDI for ‘C’ North football crown

...MCI then went on a ground-and-pound march of epic proportions, driving 88 yards in 20 plays with Adam Bertrand scoring on a 1-yard sneak to give the Huskies a 20-6 advantage with seven minutes to play.

The drive was aided by an occasional bit of trickery

MCI amassed 73 rushing yards during the drive, including a 5-yard run by Bertrand on a fake punt for a first down at the Huskies 26.

“We were going to punt,” said Bertrand, “but we decided we needed to change the momentum of the game a little bit and keep it in our favor. We couldn’t just give the ball up to them.”.

Bertrand later threw a halfback option pass to Matos for a 15-yard gain to the MDI 10, and three plays later, Bertrand powered into the end zone on a fourth-and-goal play.

MCI slips past MDI in C North final
Huskies back in a state game, this time in Class C

...Added coach Bertrand: “What have we got to lose? We trust our kids. I knew I was going to take the heat if it didn’t work… Adam made a big play, our line made a big play.”

MCI’s defense made big plays throughout the game, forcing three Trojan turnovers. MDI took a 6-0 lead with 5:49 left in the first quarter when Colby Lee broke an 80-0yard TD run. Lee suffered an injury in the second half and did not return.

“All week we’ve been preparing for that T. We really pride ourselves on our defense,” Adam Bertand said.
