Old-school football proves successful for Wells

...“We just like to run it. We sort of go right at you all the time,” said Coach Tim Roche, who took over the program in 1998. “We like old-school football. We haven’t changed what we’re doing in probably 35 years.”

It’s an approach that has been effective for the top seed in Class D South, which will be home against No. 2 Madison/Carrabec (9-1) in the regional final at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The winner will face Foxcroft Academy (8-2) for the state title next Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

“(Madison is) fast. They’ve got some big kids on the line,” said Ethan Marsh, a tight end and defensive end for Wells. “If we play disciplined, we should be able to win.”

Wells rushed for 347 yards and allowed 91 in its Class D debut, rolling past Winthrop/Monmouth Academy, 46-0. But the team faced more challenging opponents over the next several weeks. Following a 14-7 win over Class C power Cape Elizabeth, Wells entered halftime against Madison down 21-7 on Sept. 22.

Wells tops Madison, 34-12, to win Class D South title
Nolan Potter rushes for four TDs as the Warriors advance to play Foxcroft Academy in the state championship game.

...But Wells Coach Tim Roche thinks strategy can be overblown.

“You can make all the adjustments in the world. You can scheme all you want,” Roche said. “It comes down to who is going to block and tackle better. That’s what we did.”

Wells dominated up front and beat Madison/Carrabec 34-12 in the Class D South championship game Saturday afternoon. The Warriors rushed for 296 yards, with Nolan Potter pounding inside for 138 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries.

Running back Tyler Bridge scampered for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Wells pulls away from Madison to win D South title
Warriors scored 14 unanswered points in second half to put game away.

...Madison had success through the air, with Bess completing 14 of 29 passes for 211 yards and using his arm to guide the Bulldogs to their second score, which came on a halfback pass from Whalen to Wescott with 5:50 to go.

It wasn’t enough to steal a victory on Saturday, however. Wells made sure of it.

“When you’ve run for 27, 28 hundred yards, obviously that’s a big part of what we do,” Franzose said. “It’s tough to win a ballgame when you can’t run the ball, and you become one-dimensional. That was a big part of it. We wanted to try to stay balanced, and we just weren’t.”
