Marshwood's reign in 'B' south continues as Springer and his understudy Caverly leads Hawks past Falmouth 31-28--thanks in part to Horton's foot.

SOUTH BERWICK—It was an instant classic that featured a little of everything.

Big plays.

Long drives.

Momentum-changes left and right.

Star players coming up huge in the clutch.

And even a dose of controversy.

What Saturday afternoon’s Class B South Final didn’t have, however, was the historic happy ending that the Falmouth Yachtsmen so desperately wanted and felt they deserved.

Late field goal lifts Marshwood past Falmouth, 31-28
Max Horton kicks a 23-yard field goal with 1:19 left, and a sack by Drew Gregor secures the win as the Hawks advance to the Class B state championship game.

... Marshwood could be without starting quarterback Tommy Springer. Springer, a junior, showed signs of being concussed after taking big hits on consecutive plays, the second of which resulted in a 35-yard touchdown pass to Horton late in the third quarter. It was Springer’s third TD pass and, with Horton’s point after, gave Marshwood a 21-20 lead.

“He was pretty shook up,” Rotsko said. “I don’t know what his status is, but I’m guessing it doesn’t look good.”

Marshwood forced a Garret Aube fumble on Falmouth’s next possession, recovered by Cameron Fischer at the Falmouth 40.

HAWKS 31, YACHTSMEN 28: Clutch plays lift Marshwood to Class B title game

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — The most important pass completion of the game was a downfield strike in the fourth quarter thrown by a wide receiver.

The holder on the go-ahead field goal with 1:19 left had been on the job for all of two days.

A game that saw stretches of offensive brilliance was ended by a sack and forced fumble just 10 yards from disaster.

The top-seeded, unbeaten Marshwood High School football leaned on every rung of its depth chart and every bit of its resilience to stave off No. 3 Falmouth, 31-28, on Saturday, and earn the right to play in the Class B championship game next week.

“It doesn’t get more exciting than that,” said Marshwood coach Alex Rotsko.

Final score should have been 31-21 Marshwood....I just started to watch the replay of the game and the play before Falmouth scored their first touchdown their left guard pulled right on a play-action pass and was a good 5-7 yards down field.

At 17:50 of the Falmouth broadcast check out another pass where #58 from Falmouth is 8 yards down field on a ten yard completion...I have no horse in the race who but what a poor job by the Umpire and Referee in that game!!

I hardly ever see that called in high school football unless the ball is thrown to a lineman because there usually are not enough officials to be looking for that in addition to everything else they are responsible for spotting.

I saw ineligible downfield called one time in the last ten years, and it was a blown call when it was made (pass was behind the line of scrimmage, entire offensive line was about 8 yards downfield).

I'd be surprised if coaches didn't teach their linemen to cheat 5-7 yards downfield if they can. No high school ref in Maine is making that call.

following emailed to tom@mbr.org

This past Saturday’s Falmouth vs Marshwood football game was one for the ages. Two teams giving 110% for a full 48 minutes. I stopped a Falmouth football player after the game and told him I was proud of him and his entire team. Although the sore ended 31-28 Marshwood their was no losers in this game. This is one game I will never forget!
